ICC World T20 2016: Five turning points of England’s narrow win vs Sri Lanka

England defeated Sri Lanka by 10 runs in an important clash at the Feroshah Kotla Stadium, New Delhi. It was well fought match but England held their nerves at crucial moments which put pressure on Sri Lanka. With this win England has qualified for the semi-finals along with West Indies.  Sri Lanka was in a hopless situation at one stage but because of Mathews knock they came close of winning the match.

  1. Good partnership between Jason Roy and Joe Root

Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field. England got off to a poor start losing the wicket Hales for 0. After the loss of Hales wicket, Jason Roy and Joe Root attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers. Both of them put on 61 for the second wicket in 9.3 over’s which laid foundation for a big score for England. These two players played some excellent shots. The partnership ended at the score of 65 when Joe Root hit a shot ball straight to fielder. Joe Root was dismissed for 25.

  1. Jos Buttler cameo innings

Jos Buttler came to the crease at the fall of second wicket. He attacked the spinners right from the start. After the fall of Jason Roy wicket, Buttler took the charge and created pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. In the 17th Buttler smashed 3 boundaries of Chameera which put the Sri Lankan bowlers under. He brought up half century off 28 balls. Buttler and Morgan steadied the England innings and put on 74 in quick fire time. Buttler remained not out on 66 off 37 balls and helped England to post a competitive total of 171 for 4 in 20 over’s.

  1. Bad bowling by Sri Lankan bowlers in the last five overs

At the end of the 15th over, England were 99 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. After that the Sri Lankan bowlers gave too many runs. Sri Lankan bowlers did bowl yorker’s and the England batsmen took advantage off that. Buttler and Morgan just smashed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground. In the last over Thisara Perera bowled yorker’s which limited the damage. In the last five over’s Sri Lanka gave away 72 runs off 5 over’s.

  1. Sri Lanka losing early wickets

Chasing a massive target of 172, the Sri Lankan innings got off to disappointing start losing the wicket of Dilshan in the very first over itself. In the next over Chandimal was also dismissed playing a poor stroke. Siriwardene who was sent as pinch hitter was also dismissed. In the first three over’s Sri Lanka were in deep trouble at 15 for 4. Sri Lankan batsmen needed to take advantage of the first six overs but could not take it.

  1. Mathews efforts goes in vain

Mathews came at the crease when Sri Lanka was struggling at 15 for 4. Mathews and Kapugdera stitched an 80 for the fifth wicket. Mathews took time to settle and then smashed the England spinners for sixers which put pressure on England bowlers. In the last few over’s Thisara Perera and Dasun Shanka played cameo’s but could not help Mathews. He completed his half century off 40 balls and really kept Sri Lanka in the game. Mathews in the last over could not big strokes and remained not out on 69. Mathews tried a lot but could help Sri Lanka to overhaul the target.
