ICC World T20 2016: Five turning points of Pakistan v Bangladesh

Pakistan started their ICC World T20 tournament off to a great start by beating Bangladesh by 55 runs at Eden Gardens earlier today. It was a dominating performance by Pakistan who outplayed Bangladesh in all departments. Pakistan posted a big total of 201 runs and Bangladesh was restricted to 146. Here we look at the five turning points of Pakistan versus Bangladesh match.

  1. Openers getting the team off to flying start

Pakistan won the toss and choose to bat on a good batting pitch. The openers Sharjeel Khan and Ahmed Shehzad got the team off to a flying start. In the first over Bangladesh only gave six runs. Al-Amin bowled the second over and Sharjeel Khan was severe with stroke play. He hit 2 sixes and 1 four in that over. Pakistan had made a quick-fire start to the team scoring 25 off the first 2 over’s. In the next over Sharjeel Khan tried to play another big shot but was dismissed by Sunny. He was dismissed for 18 off 10 balls.

  1. Ahmed Shehzad and Hafeez laying a good foundation

After the loss of Sharjeel Khan wicket, Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad laid the foundation for the Pakistan team. Hafeez and Shehzad played excellent cricketing shots hitting fours and sixes putting the pressure on the Bangladesh bowling attack. Both of these players attacked the Bangladesh bowling and never allowed them to settle in a particular line and length. Ahmed Shehzad really provided the foundation for other batsmen to score more runs. Both of them put on 95 runs in 68 balls. Before Ahmed Shehzad was dismissed for 52, Pakistan were in good position at 117 for 1 in 13 over’s.

  1. Shahid Afridi quick fire 49 off 19 balls

Afridi the captain of the side came at number 4 and started to hit the balls right from the start. He played a captain’s knock and smashed Mortaza for 2 fours and 1 six. He smashed the Bangladesh bowlers to all parts of the ground. After losing the wicket of Hafeez, Afridi took the charge and smashed Bangladesh bowlers. Afridi looking to hit half century was dismissed for 49 off Al-Amin bowling. He smashed four fours and four sixes which helped Pakistan to post a competitive total of 201.

  1. Shahid Afridi contribution as a bowler

Shahid Afridi impressed with his bowling. Defending a target of 202, Shahid Afridi brought himself on in the 5th over but went for 11 runs and also picked up the wicket of Shabbir Rahman with a quicker delivery. After that, Shahid Afridi picked the wicket of Tamim Iqbal which almost sealed the match for Pakistan team. Shahid Afridi kept the pressure on the Bangladesh batting line-up and did not allow the batsmen to hit big strokes. In his four over’s Afridi gave away 27 runs and picked 2 wickets also. For this performance, he was named the man of the match.

  1. Controlled bowling by other Pakistan bowlers

The other Pakistan bowlers did an excellent job for the team. Mohammad Aamir started the innings with a wicket in very first over. Apart from this, Mohammad Irfan, Imad Wasim, Riaz and Malik all bowled well. All the bowlers did not allow the Bangladesh batsmen to score runs with ease which made life tough for Bangladesh batsmen. The Pakistan bowlers restricted Bangladesh to 146 for 6 and won the match by 55 runs which will give them confidence ahead of their match against India.
