‘If MS Dhoni Is Successful In Champions Trophy, He Would Go On Till The World Cup 2019’

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to step down as India’s limited-overs captain earlier this year has put a huge question mark over his availability for the 2019 World Cup in England. Dhoni’s form of late has not been very good either. However, he showed glimpses of his old form during the limited-overs series against England this year and his childhood coach Keshav Banerjee feels if the former India skipper does well in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, he would go on to play in the next 50-over World Cup.

“At the moment, his sole focus is on the Champions Trophy. If he’s successful there, I think he would go on till the World Cup 2019,” Banerjee said at the launch of an under-14 cricket tournament.

Dhoni’s finishing abilities have come under severe scrutiny in recent times but Banerjee feels the ageing player could do very little about it. At the same time, he said Dhoni’s ‘game-analysing’ ability makes him an asset to the team.

“It’s natural that with age, you would not hit the same strike rate. But his will power and game-analysing sense are the two qualities that make him special. He’s out there playing domestic one-dayers (Vijay Hazare Trophy) to keep himself in shape ahead of the Champions Trophy,” Banerjee added.

Speaking about Dhoni’s sudden decision to resign from captaincy, Banerjee said:

“He never liked to be pushed so he called it quits before any one could point fingers at him in the Tests format.

“He never kept anyone in the loop, even his best friend or parents did not know when he quit Tests,” added Banerjee.

Banerjee also expressed his disappointment with the way his old pupil was removed as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.

“It appeared to me a decision by the team owners as Dhoni did not have any choice now but to play this season (with Chennai Super Kings being suspended),” he concluded.
