Ind v NZ 2016: India’s ODI squad for first 3 ODIs versus New Zealand announced!

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today announced the 15-members ODI squad for the five ODI’s against New Zealand. The new batch of selectors led by the former Indian wicket-keeper MSK Prasad did not alter with the captaincy as M.S. Dhoni was retained as the captain. There are some familiar names in the team like Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Manish Pandey and Axar Patel.

The injured duo of openers, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul has not been included in the one-day series citing injuries. M.S. Dhoni earlier said that he would like Rahane to bat at the top order; hence no other specialist openers like Gambhir or Karun Nair were included in the squad. Though, Mandeep Singh has retained his place but his chances of being included in playing XI looks dim and bleak.

The middle order batsman, Suresh Raina, who was axed from the T20 squad on U.S.A. voyage, has surprisingly made a comeback in the squad as going by pactivities in past few days it looked like Yuvraj Singh might be recalled in the team but selectors decided to go with Raina. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who couldn’t even sustain his place in playing XI in IPL has been called in the ODI squad for the first time. Not to forget he was not a part of T20 squad that toured U.S.A., there is a big mystery behind his selection as he could just take 5 wickets on India A tour of Australia. He couldn’t even score a single half-century in seven games he played.

The Haryana off-spinner Jayant Yadav, who was called to the Test squad in place of Ishant Sharma, has earned maiden call in absence of Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Though, he will face a competition with his statemate Amit Mishra as the place of Axar Patel place in the squad can’t be questioned because of his ability to bat in at least in home conditions. Yuzvendra Chahal failed to retain his place in the squad.

Dhawal Kulkarni, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah will team up to compose the pace department as Mohammed Shami has been rested ahead of long home series.

Currently, both the teams are in Indore where they are scheduled to play the third and final Test of the series. Currently, team India is leading the Test series by a margin of 2-0.

However, one can expect a turnaround from New Zealand team in the One-day series.

The Indian squad for New Zealand One-day series is as follows:

MS Dhoni(Capt/wk), Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Amit Mishra, Jasprit Bumrah, Dhawal Kulkarni, Umesh Yadav, Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav.
