Though Virat Kohli didn’t have a good run in the Bengaluru ODI against Australia during his innings of 21, he saw himself getting his name registered in the record books, as he became the fastest ever captain to score 2000 runs in ODI cricket.
The record was held by AB de Villiers, the former South Africa skipper, who completed his 2000 runs in 41 innings, but, Kohli, on Thursday achieved the milestone in just 36 innings. Michael Clarke is the third player in the list. He took a total of 47 outings to the crease to meet the accolade.
Kohli, now a permanent captain of Indian team, made his ODI captaincy debut during the tri-nation series in West Indies in the year 2013. He continued to lead the team whenever MS Dhoni was absent from the side, but at the start of the year 2017, Dhoni decided to relinquish the post of captain, and Kohli got appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team in all formats of the game.
The limited-overs series against England early this year was the first time when Kohli led Indian team with Dhoni in the side. In fact, it was the first instance when Kohli also led India in T20I cricket when the two teams faced each other in the shortest format of the game.
At present, Kohli is the captain of Indian cricket team in all the formats of the game. In the longest format, it is Ajnkya Rahane who is the deputy to Kohli, whereas, Rohit Sharma was recently given the job to assist the skipper in limited-overs cricket.
