IND vs AUS 2017: Ashton Agar Believes Wrist Spinners could be Impactful

Australian bowling all-rounder Ashton Agar revealed the wrist spinners have a huge responsibility on their shoulders – to perform in the forthcoming five-match One-day Internationals against India, as the fascinating series is kick starting from Sunday (September 17) at M.A Chidambaram in Chennai.

Agar was talking about his teammate leg-spinner Adam Zampa including counterpart Kuldeep Yadav and the 27-year-old Haryana-born leggie Yuzvendra Chahal in the set-up after senior campaigners and spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were rested for the rotation policy.

“I think they will have a big role in the series, to be fair. There are three of them at the moment. I think they can certainly put more on the ball,” was quoted as saying by newswire PTI.

The young bowler further feels the bowlers are capable of doing well in the limited edition of gentleman’s game. While throwing light on the importance of the wrist spinners to its length and breadth, Agar stated they are learned as wicket providing options in a nutshell for the team leader particularly in the shorter version of the game.

“When it is night time it can be harder to pick up the wrong ‘uns. In general, they are wicket-taking bowlers,” Agar remarked.

The 23-year-old Agar expressed it’s difficult at times to pick the bowlers when they are at their best particularly. After expressing excitement on his return, Agar revealed it would depend on the surface whether to go for two spinners or not, as Western Australian has learnt a lot following his omission in the recent past.

“They are good attacking options and can be hard to get away,” Agar asserted.

Agar was undergoing a rigorous practice session, is hopeful to come good in the series after featuring in the two ODIs against Australian in 2015 at Manchester.

“They don’t need more of the spin friendly wicket to spin the ball and they are all pretty clever, It will be Interesting to see how they play out,” Agar expects.

Agar, who is returning to the fold of 50-over format after two years, stated the wrist bowlers are being considered as a strong force, who have the ability turn the ball in both directions.

“They (leggies) are a really valuable asset in limited-overs cricket because they can spin the ball both ways,” Agar maintained.

After making his international debut in 2013, Agar played four Tests two ODIs and two T20Is respectively. He has bagged 12 wickets across all three formats. Photo Credit: Getty Images.

The promising prospect Agar is in India to don the Australian colours for the third time which is subjected to a direct entry owing to the selection of Playing XI.

“The three leg- spinners – Chahal, especially Zamps [Zampa], with his slider and wrong ‘un, he’s got a lot of different balls and he knows when to use them,” Agar further added.

Moreover, Agar is expected to team-up with Zampa in a bid to push for results on spin-friendly conditions in India if he would get a chance to take field straightaway.

“If I get a chance, we will try to bowl really well in partnership together. I think we have planned well and are ready to take on the right-handers,” Agar concluded.

The three-match Twenty20 series will be beginning from October 7 in Ranchi before the second T20Is is scheduled on October 10 at Guwahati in Assam and final match of the bilateral series on October 13 in Hyderabad.
