IND vs ENG 2016, 4th Test: ‘Mohammed Shami’s injury has affected India’

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has said that fast bowler Mohammed Shami was badly missed by the Indian team on the opening day of the fourth Test in Mumbai as England finished the day on 288 for 5. The bowler was ruled out of the match after failing to fully recover from a sore knee.

With 10 wickets, the right-arm fast bowler has been one of India’s standout bowlers in this series, troubling the England batsman with pace and swing. Along with Ravichandran Ashwin, he has provided breakthroughs in important situations in the first three Tests.

Gavaskar said that Shami’s absence helped England skipper Alastair Cook play comfortably.

Speaking to NDTV, Gavaskar said:“Shami’s injury has affected India, He has troubled Alastair Cook in the series. But today, Cook looked comfortable. Shami has the ability to extract some extra bounce off the surface. Shami is an impact bowler and his absence is keenly felt.”

After initially struggling to get the breakthroughs, the hosts clawed their way back into the match by taking some quick wickets towards the end of the day. R Ashwin dismissed three English batsmen inside 19 runs to help India share the honours on day 1.

Gavaskar said that it England manage to score 400 runs in their first innings, Virat Kohli’s team will be under pressure.

The batting legend also had some word of praise for England’s debutant Keaton Jennings, who scored 112 runs to lead England’s charge.

“I was impressed by Keaton Jennings’ temperament. The young man looks a promising player for England. Temperament is what separates the boys from the men. Players can work on their technique, but temperament is key in Test cricket,” he said.

Gavaskar also looked satisfied with Kohli’s captaincy. He said:“Virat should have brought Jadeja on much earlier. He used the new ball bowlers for too long. There should have been a change when Umesh Yadav was being hammered. These are little things. But on the whole, Virat did nothing wrong. I was impressed with his captaincy.”
