India vs England 2016, 5th Test: Twitter Reacts As Moeen Ali, Joe Root Put Visitors On Top
Jan 19, 2019 at 12:22 PM
Riding on Moeen Ali’s brilliant ton and Joe Root’s 88, England grabbed honors on the opening day of the final Test as they ended on 284 for 4.
Earlier, England skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and made the brave decision of batting first in a ground where no team has won batting first in this millennium. And his decision was proved wrong straight away by the Indian bowlers as they dismissed both the English openers with only 21 on the board. Ishant Sharma, playing his first match of the series, dismissed Keaton Jennings for only one while Ravindra Jadeja got rid of Cook for 10. But a 146-run partnership between Joe Root and Moeen Ali steadied the ship before Jadeja removed Root for 88 to end the big stand.
Another 86-run partnership between Ali and Jonny Bairstow bolstered the visitors’ position in the match. Jadeja once again provided the breakthrough when he had Bairstow caught at short cover for 49. But Ali held fort from one end and scored his second century of the series to help his team close the day in a good position. In process, he also completed 1000 Test runs in 2016. Ben Stokes was unbeaten on five at the other end while Ali was playing on 120.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the day’s play:
Well played @MoeenAli huge knock! Fighting like a Lion. Do wish he'd integrate more though. #INDvENG

Back when I was six years old, I believed you were lbw if the ball hit you below the knee, anywhere. Ravindra Jadeja still thinks so.

Is there a surface anywhere in the world on which Joe Root cannot score fluently? Blancmange? Rice pudding? The mattress in my hotel room?

Can't remember when I last saw a fielder throw the ball on the helmet & concede five. 🤔 #INDvENG

Ishant Sharma is the 9th pacer to take 100 Test wickets in Asia. However, he is the slowest to reach the 100-wicket mark in Asia. #INDvENG
