IND vs NZ 2017: Will Kuldeep Yadav Get the Opportunity to Enthrall His Home Crowd?

Left-arm unorthodox bowler Kuldeep Yadav has been a sensation in his brief international career, and along with Yuzvendra Chahal, the duo has forged a formidable partnership which has paid rich dividends for India in the recent times.

He got dropped from the 2nd ODI against New Zealand after a mediocre performance at the Wankhede, but given his variations and guile, he is a man for the future.

Kuldeep rose to prominence during the Champions League for the Kolkata Knight Riders but very recently in an IPL match in Kanpur in 2016, Kuldeep’s childhood coach remembered every bit from the encounter at the Gren Park in Kanpur between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Gujarat Lions.

However, he admitted to the fact that the highlight of the match was the boisterous chant from the crowd calling out Kuldeep’s name. Kuldeep’s childhood coach Kapil Pandey was pragmatic and said that selection in the Indian team is not done on the basis of public emotion.

“Public toh chahti thi ki Kuldeep woh match khele. Woh Kanpur ka pehla IPL match tha… lekin IPL aur India team ka selection thodi public sentiment mein kiya jata hain,” he said.

Kapil further stated it was the IPL from where he witnessed the growing popularity of Kuldeep as a bowler.

Main bata nahi sakta kitna garv mehsoos kar raha tha us din… woh Gujarat ka home match tha, lekin sabhi KKR ke bande ko support kar rahe the,” he added.

Kuldeep is among those rare breeds of bowlers who emerge once in a blue moon. He has mastered this tough art from Kapil and with has matured into an excellent bowler. During the year 2016, Kuldeep was still raw and without much first-class experience, but he impressed all and sundry with his subtle variations and consistently bamboozled top-class batsmen. Kanpur is not known to produce legendary cricketers, and Kuldeep’s emergence has given them a reason to cherish.

In his brief international career, Kuldeep has already bagged an ODI hat-trick which is only the 2nd time for an Indian bowler. His rise has been rapid, but he has to maintain his consistency. In the opening ODI against the Kiwis, he was left scratching his head, as Tom Latham unleashed a barrage of sweep shots which unsettled Kuldeep and from there on he went on conceding runs.

Captain Kohli might be a worried man especially with the fact that how Kuldeep succumbed to the attack by Latham. He has to start having other plans, and with time he will mature as a bowler. He is still very young and has a great future ahead of him.

“Credit to the New Zealand batsmen, especially Latham, for having played the spinners so efficiently,” was what Kohli said after the loss in the opening ODI in Mumbai.

“I think he got flustered when Latham began playing the sweep shot. Even the dew in the evening did not help, as he found it difficult to grip the ball. When he had called me a couple of days ago, I told him that he was bowling far too much on the middle-leg stump line to Latham. I think he should stick to a predominantly outside the off-stump line to Latham and other left-handers, while at the same time not compromise on his flight, as I believe that’s his strength,” said Kuldeep’s coach Kapil.

Kuldeep will get another chance to turn out in national colours in his home ground on Sunday, but it remains to get seen whether he gets the nod or Axar Patel on the basis of dismissing Latham in the Pune ODI gets in. But as Kuldeep’s coach said team selection is not done on public sentiments.
