If bouncing back in style from a rare failure is the trademark of the most successful teams in the world then it is safe to say Team India is one of them.
After being on the backfoot for the first three and a half days of the just-concluded first Test at the Eden Gardens, Virat Kohli & Co. showed why they are the best in the world? As, they not only made a match out of the contest which was drifting away from them but pushed themselves on the verge of victory as well.
After conceding a sizable 122-run lead in the first innings, India came out with a clear frame of mind in the second innings. Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul set the tone for the innings with a quickfire partnership of 166 runs before Virat Kohli’s sublime century helped the hosts to set an improbable 231-run target.
With just over a session left, the match was looking primed to end in a draw but what followed after that completely took everyone by surprise. India’s in-form pace duo Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami managed to find some conventional seam movement and reverse swing to put the visitors on the mat.
By the team the Islanders could get a feel of things, they were already four down with just 22 runs on the board. A 47-run stand between Dinesh Chandimal and Niroshan Dickwella revived Sri Lanka’s hopes, but Bhuvneshwar and Shami were not done yet.
Shami went through Chandimal’s defences with a brilliant inswinger to end the dodgy partnership before Bhuvneshwar accounted for Dickwella and Dilruwan Perera to reduce the visitors to 75 for seven.
However, just when it looked India would walk away with the match, the bad light ruined their hopes as the game ended in a draw.
It was a disappointing end to the stunning bowling spells from Bhuvneshwar and Shami, but the duo has been receiving lavish praise from all quarters. India batting star Rohit Sharma also took to Twitter to praise the duo as he wrote:
“Not many occasion where you get to see a spell like that from a fast bowler in Indian conditions. Outstanding spell that from @BhuviOfficial and @MdShami11 ??.”
