India v Australia 2017: Virat Kohli Is A Flog, Says Merv Hughes

As if all the criticism by the media of his country and his fellow countrymen for Virat Kohli were not enough, former Australia fast bowler Merv Hughes has called the under-fire India skipper a ‘flog’ which is an Australian slang.

Kohli was targeted by the opportunist Australian media and the players from Down Under throughout the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar series. The Indian star had stopped short of calling Steve Smith a cheat after the DRS controversy during the Bengaluru Test, and also accused the Australia team of taking a dig at India physio Patrick Farhart.

However, his claims did not go down too well with the Aussie media which went as far as comparing him with animals and controversial US president Donald Trump.

And although Hughes praised Kohli for his game, he said it would be hard to like him from the opposition’s perspective.

“He (Kohli) is a great player and he is probably a bloke you would love to have on your side, but watching it from afar and watching him in other colours, you just think ‘what a flog’,” Hughes was quoted by ‘Daily Telegraph’ as having told SEN Radio.

Hughes’ comments have come after the conclusion of the four-match series which the hosts won 2-1. At the end of the game, Kohli had said he no longer considers the Australians his friends after the heated series.

Speaking about the closely-fought series, Hughes said:“The Indians played a real tough brand of cricket. I think they went out in the first Test and thought it would be a real piece of cake and when Australia knocked them over in that first Test match, they changed their attitude and they came out real strong and Virat Kohli especially.

He further said that Kohli missing the final Test due to injury was probably ‘not a bad thing’ as the aggressive Indian player might have done something regrettable in the match.

“If he is talking about the Australians playing it hard, it is a bit hypocritical for me because he turned his game around and played that way in especially that second Test and then going into the third Test, it probably was not a bad thing he was injured because he may have gone over the top,” said Hughes.
