India v England 2016: Probable India Squad For ODIs and T20Is

After crushing England in the Test series, the Indian team will look to overpower them in limited overs squad. Though there will be many changes in the squad of both the teams, but still one can expect Indian team to crush England in ODIs as well.

With Indian selectors yet to announce the limited overs squad, here is the predicted limited overs squad of Indian cricket team –

KL Rahul of India celebrates his fifty during the 1st international T20 Trophy match between India and the West Indies at Lauderhill.

KL Rahul – The in-form batsman KL Rahul was unlucky to miss the two-Tests and ODI series against New Zealand due to an injury. He is all set to make a comeback in ODI squad like he did in the Tests. Lokesh Rahul made a great comeback in the Test matches as after failing in the fourth Test, he rebounded with an innings of 199, missing the magical 200 mark by just one run, due to his own mistake. KL Rahul will replace injured Rohit Sharma in the squad, who was the opener of Indian team against New Zealand. KL Rahul, just like every other player will aim to seal a spot for Champions Trophy as well.

Shikhar Dhawan – Despite being dropped from Test squad, Shikhar Dhawan will make a comeback in the ODI team as he has been the choice of Indian skipper since he made a comeback in the year 2013. He was unlucky to miss the New Zealand ODIs due to an injury but now with this series being last before the crucial Champions Trophy, Shikhar Dhawan will be the best choice whom the Indian team can select. He has already proved match fitness by playing three Ranji Trophy games. Though his performance was below the mark but still, he is the best choice for an opener in the team.

Virat Kohli holds an average of 52.93 in One Day Internationals for India.

Virat Kohli – Being the permanent choice of the Indian team, Virat Kohli will force an automatic selection. A lengthy break of 25 days between the start of ODI series and end of Test series facilitate the Test skipper to spend some time off from the field and he will look to continue the same form in coloured jersey with the white ball.

Suresh Raina – Just like Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina was also unlucky to miss the New Zealand ODIs as the left-handed batsman was the part of the squad but missed the series due to viral fever. He is all set to make a comeback in the ODI squad and this could well be the last chance for him with the emergence of players like Karun Nair, Kedar Jadhav and KL Rahul, his place in ODI squad is not a guarantee now.

Kedar Jadhav – The star of the Indian team in the ODI series against New Zealand is all set to retain his place in the squad. Once again, the captain will expect an all-round show from him as in the last series, after the way he shone with the bat and the ball. Surely, if he can continue his form in this series as well, then he will confirm his booking for Champions Trophy. Jadhav though has to work on his batting and have to learn the finishing role from both, M.S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

Mandeep Singh – Mandeep Singh will retain his place in the squad but again we might see him being benched for full series as the Indian team already has many options. He will have to wait for his chances and his inclusion in the playing XI is subjected to injury to any player.

M.S. Dhoni – The Indian ODI skipper is all set to make a comeback in the ODI squad after a hiatus of two months. This series is of utmost importance for him as this is the last 50 over series that Indian team is playing before they fly England to defend their Champions Trophy title. So Dhoni will be looking to eke out as much as he can from the series. He will also participate in the two practice games, so as to get match practice before the start of the international fixtures.

Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel

Parthiv Patel – Here comes a big surprise Parthiv Patel, who could be included in the ODI squad due to great performance for Test team and also his great form in Vijay Hazare Trophy last year. He led his team from the front and scored a crucial century in the final of Vijay Hazare trophy to help Gujarat lift the title.

Though the innings came a year ago but that it will help his case as Indian team needs an experienced player in the squad.

It can be said that Parthiv edges Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan for a place in Test squad due to his experience and the same thing can happen.

Hardik Pandya celebrates a wicket.
Hardik Pandya celebrates a wicket.

Hardik Pandya – Projected as the next Kapil Dev of India, by the man himself, his short career has been nothing less than a fairytale. From almost nowhere, though he did play some cameos, he was selected in the T20 squad for Australia and then in the ODI squad against New Zealand.

The biggest surprise came when he found his name in the Test squad as well. He was unfortunate to be left out of the squad after getting injured but a fit again Pandya is all set to make a comeback in the ODI format. He might also feature in the two practice games against England to prove his match fitness.

Ishant Sharma – With the Indian fast bowling spearhead Mohammed Shami injured and Umesh Yadav likely to be rested, Ishant Sharma’s chances of making a comeback in the squad and to lead pace attack in their absence has increased.

This will be a golden opportunity for Ishant to not just show that he is an experienced player but also seal a spot for the Champion Trophy as well.

If selected, Ishant will be quite crucial in England as he has some sweet memories in that country. A seven-wicket haul at Lord’s and two wickets of Ravi Bopara and Eoin Morgan at a crucial juncture in Champions Trophy final still brings a smile on fans’ faces. He will be an asset for the team in Champions Trophy and this series will serve as an entrance test for him to get a place in the team for the ICC tournament.

Barinder Sran – Sran’s case is a mysterious one as he was selected in the Indian squad on basis of a net session. He then flew to Australia, played three games, got dropped and then made a comeback in Zimbabwe series. He may now be selected in the squad because the Indian team short on pacers for this series, mainly due to 13 Test matches in the season. He can replace Umesh Yadav in the squad as Yadav will be given a time off to be ready for Bangladesh and Australia Test series. Though a brilliant performance in this series may not make a place for him for Champion Trophy but he can be a backup for a senior player in case of injuries.

Jasprit Bumrah of India.

Jasprit Bumrah – The find of the year 2016, Jasprit Bumrah, will retain his place in the squad and might assist likes of Ishant Sharma (or whoever is selected) in the pace department. Bumrah, in all certainty, will fly to England to play Champions Trophy but he will play this series with a different motive, to perform well and present a case for a place in the Test team as well.

Bumrah will be the key for the Indian team in slog overs as his action and accurate yorkers are something that will be a delight for any captain who possesses and have the right to attain his services.

Ravindra Jadeja holds the Player-of-the-match and Golden Ball award in the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Ravindra Jadeja – Even though Jadeja played all five Test matches in the series against England but he will be one of the two players to participate in ODI and T20I series as well. This is a series for him to show his supremacy as despite playing more matches than Amit Mishra, he is not the leader of spin bowling when it comes to ODIs. Amit Mishra is less experienced than him but he is the one who will be the leader of spin bowling in Ashwin’s absence. This will be a series for him to claim the supremacy. His contribution with the bat will also be crucial in the series.

Amit Mishra
Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra – The leader of the spin department in absence of Ravichandran Ashwin will have a crucial role to play in the success of team heavily depends on him, in the Indian conditions. He was the highest wicket-taker for India in ODI series against New Zealand and skipper Dhoni will hope for a similar performance from him. Despite performing well in the series, Mishra might find it difficult to get a place in Champions Trophy squad. With the sudden emergence of Jayant Yadav, Mishra’ place in both Test and ODI squad looks in real danger.

Manish Pandey – After failing in the ODI series against New Zealand, Pandey will have one more chance to show that he is there to stay for long-term. This will be a golden opportunity for him to seal a place in the squad but if he fails in this series, then he himself is to be blamed. Pandey will be preferred over Mandeep Singh but a failure in one or two games can also force the captain to bench him. With an eye on the Champions trophy squad, Pandey has to perform in the series so as to show that he is the horse of the long race.

Changes for T20I squad –

Rishabh Pant at his best in Ranji

Rishabh Pant – With the kind of form he is in Rishabh Pant will be in the T20I squad which starts on 26th January. After selection, the captain will be under pressure to facilitate him with a place in the squad.

With Rohit Sharma not part of the squad, we might see him opening the innings with KL Rahul as Shikhar Dhawan might not be considered to play T20Is.

However, if captain chooses Dhawan to open the innings, in that case, Pant will be slated to play in middle order, probably at number four or five but yes he will be the part of the squad and this series will tell whether he is a player of a long run or will he have a touch and go career, just like many cricketers have had in past.

Ashish Nehra in place of Ishant Sharma – Ashish Nehra made a strong comeback in the Indian squad for the T20Is against Australia. He then went on to play Asia cup and World T20 but was dropped for Zimbabwe series, for no reason.

He will also make a comeback in the squad as he still has T20 cricket left in him and there might be a case when this series also enlighten a spark in him to play ODI cricket as well, and there is a remote chance that Nehra lead India in Champions Trophy. It can probably be the best thing to happen to an Indian cricketer. But for that, Nehra will have to perform and show that he still has bowling left in him.
