India vs Australia, 1st ODI: Twitter Reacts As Hosts Hammer Steve Smith & Co.
Sep 17, 2017 at 10:16 PM
India defeated Australia by 26 runs (DLS method) in the rain-curtailed first One-Day Internationals in Chennai to go one up in the five-match series.
Chasing a revised total of 164 in 21 overs, the visitors went off to a poor start as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Hilton Cartwright for just 1. Hardik Pandya then put India firmly on top by dismissing Steve Smith and Travis Head cheaply to reduce Australia to 29 for 3. The world champions then suffered a huge blow when their in-form opener David Warner departed too.
After the 10th over, Australia were 47 for four before Glenn Maxwell slammed Kuldeep Yadav for 22 runs in the 11th over to revive Australia’s hopes. However, Maxwell’s onslaught did not last long as Yuzvendra Chahal sent him back to leave Australia reeling at 76 for five after 12 overs.
The remaining Australian batsmen then found the Indian spinners too tough to handle as the tourists kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually restricted to 137 for 9.
Earlier, the hosts were rescued by half-centuries from Hardik Pandya and Mahendra Singh Dhoni after being reduced to 87 for 5. The Men in Blue went off to a disastrous start with Nathan Coulter-Nile running riot by dismissing Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, and Manish Pandey cheaply to leave the hosts reeling at 11 for 3.
A 53-run stand between Rohit Sharma and Kedar Jadhav calmed down the nerves in the dressing room, but just when it looked like the pair had got a measure of things, the former threw away his wicket. The home side then found itself in further trouble when Marcus Stoinis accounted for Jadhav.
However, a 118-run stand between Pandya and Dhoni gave Indian innings the much-needed impetus. The partnership was broken when Pandya, after scoring a stroke-filled 83 off 66 balls, perished to Adam Zampa. Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar then helped India to finish the innings on a strong note. They added 72 runs for the sixth wicket as the Men in Blue finished their innings on 281 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the match:
India's wrist spinners are doing their cause no harm at all. India wanted wickets from them and they have given that.

There’s something wrong with rules that let India bat ODI-style but require Australia to bat T20-style, in the same match.

When Dhoni is keeping the stumps should wear a helmet. #INDvAUS

Smith ensures Kohli does not feel too bad. What bromance.

Bumrah's catching matches his bowling. Awkward but effective. #IndvAus

Head probably picked because he can bowl 5 overs. We are only playing two batsmen in the XI. #AllRounderXI

Hardik Pandya has made it a habit of playing the big impact innings. Seeing one currently. Amazing stuff! #INDvAUS

Hardik Pandya has hit 19 sixes in ODIs. Nine of them have come off hat-tricks – three sixes in three balls to Imad, Shadab and now Zampa.
