India vs Australia 2017, Border-Gavaskar Trophy, First Test, Day 1: Visitors Stand Tall In First Session
Feb 23, 2017 at 12:17 PM
The stage was set for Indian spinners as the pitch curator laid down the driest pitch ever, what Shane Warne reckoned before the start of the day but still Ravichandran Ashwin and co. couldn’t reap benefits as David Warner and Matt Renshaw stood tall for the first 27 overs, before the Kangaroos lost their first wicket when Warner fell to Umesh Yadav.
Chances came, Indian spinners created pressure but the Aussie openers put on a tidy display to keep the spinners at bay, turning down spin advantage to India at least in the first hour.
Ishant Sharma started the proceedings with the new ball and bowled a tidy first over in the day. It was no surprise when Ashwin was handed the ball to test the ability of Australian batsmen right at the start. It got a little bit tricky as the offie posed a lot of problems for both Warner and Matt Renshaw.
Both Ishant and Ashwin continued to bowl in tandem before Jayant Yadav was called in, with skipper Virat Kohli deploying two spinners in hope of a wicket.
Jayant though enjoyed success in his fourth over when he deceived Warner and bowled him out but he had a surprise at the other end as the umpire had already indicated it was a no-ball.
Renshaw retired hurt in the 28th over due to a stomach ache, which forced Shaun Marsh to come before Lunch.
Brief Score: Australia (David Warner Matt Renshaw 38 (retd.); Umesh Yadav 1-1 ) vs India at Pune.
