India vs Australia 2017 First Test: Top Five Talking Points Of The Game

Australians bamboozled the Indian team in its own den and cruised to a win by a big margin of 333 runs. Never in their dream, the Indian team would have thought of such a debacle but Australian side made it possible and went up in the series by a margin of 1-0.

There were many talking points in the Test match.

Here are few of the highlighting points from the game –

Steve O’ Keefe Spinning The Game – Yes, he was one of the main bowlers for the Australian team on this tour but none of the Indian batsmen would have especially pointed him out and have done special preparations against this bowler. O’Keefe is not even considered a red ball bowler by legendary Shane Warne but O’keefe gave it on the face of his critics, who did not find it good enough for the longest format of the game.

O’Keefe just made every batsman dance to his tune with a total of 12 wickets in the game to topple the strong Indian batting line-up in both the innings of the game. He made an immediate impact in the game as after the Lunch break on the second day, he just came in and stole the show, grabbing six wickets in no time.

In the second innings as well, he took a total of six wickets to help his team get two extra days off before both the team flies to Bangalore for the second Test of the series

Australian fast bowler make an impact – The pitch was called a fifth day pitch by Shane Warne on the first day and the same thing was seen as it started wearying right from the first over of the day, still, Australian pacers on day two made the ball talk as it was Josh Hazlewood who got the first breakthrough for his team before Mitchell Starc jumped in with some extra pace and two wickets as well.

Both these bowlers did their job, rolling out a red carpet for Steve O’keefe and SOK duly obliged taking six wickets in the first innings, to bamboozle the Indian batsman.

Virat Kohli’s failure with the bat – Cricket is a game and there are ups and downs in each and every sport but the way Virat Kohli got out in both the innings was not up to his level. In the first innings, he just spread out his arms to nicked the ball to slip fielder Peter Handscomb. It was a strange way as Kohli was only playing his second delivery and there was no need to just go behind it.

His second inning dismissal was awful as he left a ball which was pitched a bit outside off stump, it came back in and castled his stumps, which left him staring at the pitch.

In both the innings, Kohli just gifted his wickets to Australian bowlers, which was another turning point of the Test match.

Australian batting stood tall – Australian team had a great start to the game as at one stage on day one, they were at a comfortable position with a score of 149 at loss of three wickets but lost their next seven wickets for 111 runs. It was called an epic fall but the critics were forced to take their words back after watching a great Indian batting collapse in both the innings.

Australian batsmen scored enough runs in both the innings and the way they played against the spinners was remarkable. They were patient, waited for opportunities and did no rush to score runs. Their simple mantra was to spend time at the crease and the runs will come which was evident by the fact that they played 94.5 overs in the first innings and 87 overs in the second innings.

On the other hand, Indian team batted for just 74 overs in toto, which is enough to tell the contrasting difference between both the teams.

Steven Smith’s Match winning innings – Australian batsman Steven Smith made most out of the four dropped catches as he went on to score a match-winning century. He found himself in some trouble against Ravindra Jadeja but he did not surrender. Instead, he made alterations to his batting.

His foot movement was something from which Indian team can take a lesson as the home side were lethargic on the pitch whereas Smith was proactive, and faced giants like Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to write a script for Indian team on the just third day of the game.
