India vs Australia 2017: Ian Chappell Says Indians Are Good Players Of Spin Is A Myth

Ian Chappell, former Australian cricketer, has hit out at the Indian team after their batting collapse in the first Test against Australia in Pune, where it were the Kangaroos who played spin miles better than Virat Kohli’s men.

The visitors bamboozled the home team and crushed them by 333 runs, with India failing to touch the 150-run mark even once. None of the Indian batsmen barring KL Rahul were able to stick their foot at the crease. As a result, India lost the game and saw Australia going 1-0 up in the series.

Indian batsmen are known to be the best players of spin but after this sort of show from them, questions were raised and the first one to fire shots at them is Ian Chappell, who has called their ability to play spin better a ‘myth’.

“For many years it’s been accepted that Indian batsmen play spin better than most. On the evidence of Pune that is now a myth. If batsmen continually allow an accurate spinner to maintain the length he wants to bowl on a helpful pitch, then disaster is sure to strike,” Chappell wrote in a column in Hindustan Times.

“KL Rahul was one Indian batsman who adopted an aggressive outlook. He was enjoying mounting success until his adventurous shot-making outweighed reason. Under the conditions provided in Pune, batsmen needed to utilise calculated aggression rather than a knockout blow approach,” he further wrote.

One of the major reasons for such an abysmal show from the Indian team was their poor fielding, as the players dropped a lot of catches especially that of skipper Steven Smith, who was dropped a total of five times. He then went on to hit a match-winning century for his team and indeed, it proved decisive.

Chappell cited Indian Premier League (IPL) as the reason of poor close-in fielding of India as he said:

“On the evidence of the last couple of years it would appear that the IPL has brought about a rapid improvement in India’s out fielding and an equally quick decline in close-in catching standards.”Any fielder can drop a catch but it was the lack of anticipation and faulty technique that seemed so out of place in catching positions where India once used to excel.”

“Any fielder can drop a catch but it was the lack of anticipation and faulty technique that seemed so out of place in catching positions where India once used to excel,” he CONCLUDED.
