India vs Australia 2017: Mohammed Azharuddin Calls For Dropping Jayant Yadav And Ishant Sharma For The Next Test

The former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin feels that the Indian team should make two changes in the playing XI for the next Test after the home team suffered a loss against Australia in the first Test match at Pune,

“Any batting debacle leaves a team on the backfoot. I am not saying series is lost but o11 needs to look at the kind of track that you want to play. I reckon Chinnaswamy won’t have this kind of turn. So my gut feeling is that Jayant Yadav and Ishant Sharma may be dropped from the playing XI.

“Going by their batting performance, I expect them to play an extra batsman — that is Karun Nair. He should be replacing Jayant in all likelihood. Also on the tracks that we are playing, Ishant’s back of the length stuff is not going to work. It is better that a swing bowler like Bhuvneshwar is brought into the team by Virat,” Azharuddin said.

Taking a note of the Bangalore pitch, which is not much supportive of the spinners, it seems like Indian skipper might bring back in Karun Nair to the playing XI in place of Jayant Yadav. Also, there might be a case when we might see Hardik Pandya being making a place in playing XI as his addition in the team will not just bolster the Indian pace attack but will also deepen the Indian batting line-up.

Further, Azhar praised Australian left-arm spinner Steve O’keefe for his brilliant piece of bowling as he scalped a total of 12 wickets in the game to topple the Indian batting line-up in both the innings. O’keefe overpowered the Indian spinners, who also bowled well in the game but the approach of the batsmen to reach for the spinners made all the difference at the end of the day,

“O’Keefe bowled the line that Jadeja should have bowled. If you looked at Jadeja’s line, it was on off-stump or slightly outside the off-stump trying to make use of the rough. That was where he made the mistake. On this track, Jadeja’s channel would have never got him wickets and that’s precisely what has happened.

“Now what did O’Keefe bowl? He bowled on the middle and leg line and didn’t try for a big turn. The batsmen can’t leave such deliveries. As a result, he got four lbw decisions. An orthodox left-arm spinner when he is getting 4 lbws means that he was bowling straight, knowing pitch will do the rest,” he added.

Azhar further termed Smith’s century as the best century scored on a bad pitch. The Aussie skipper played a match winning innings of 109 in the second innings, to help the team put up a record total of 441 on the board,

“I believe this was one of the best Test hundreds scored on a bad pitch. This is not something Aussies are used to. Even if you do hours of match simulation, it’s very different while playing a Test match. Smith didn’t try and play for the turn. What he did was playing Jadeja’s incoming deliveries not thinking it would turn. That was the trick,” he said.

The Australian skipper deserves every bit of praise for the way he batted against Indian spinners as it was something which can be a lesson for the Indian batsmen.
He, unlike the Indian, batsmen made the best use of his feet to tackle the spin, denying India a chance to conquer the hosts.
With this win, Kangaroos have gone one up in the series and now will be looking to continue their winning run in the next game as well, which kicks off on 4 March in Bangalore.
