India vs England 2016/17, 3rd ODI, Eden Gardens: Kedar Jadhav’s 90 In Vain As England Seal Consolation Win

It was Kedar Jadhav’s 90 off 75 balls which kept India in the hunt until the last ball, where Chris Woakes bowled a dot and helped England win the third ODI at the Eden Gardens by five runs. Despite the win, the visitors lost the ODI series 2-1.

Chasing yet another target of above 300 in this series, India couldn’t help themselves from losing couple of early wickets within first ten overs, again. Ajinkya Rahane, who was called in for Shikhar Dhawan, managed just one run before getting bowled by David Willey. KL Rahul, who smoked a boundary and a six in first over, was removed on 11. India, like in past two ODIs, were in a spot of bother.

Trying to stabilize the condition, skipper Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh then took charge. Kohli, during his innings, completed 1000 runs as skipper in just 17 innings, breaking Ab de Villiers record. The pair though looked unsettled initially, given the extra bounce offered by pitch.

Jake Ball gave Yuvraj Singh some tough time on the pitch, as one rising delivery from him hit the southpaw on his chest, resulting in an injury scare, which eventually didn’t happen. Kohli was swift in coming to his rescue and had some of motivation for him too.

He soon completed his fifty and balls later, extra bounce from Stokes’ good length delivery did the business for the visitors. Kohli was out caught behind for well made 55. Left-hander Yuvraj Singh showed glimpses of his class, before finding Sam Billings in deep for 45.

Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni too played a role, but his innings was cut short on 25 by Jake Ball. To be precise, the extra bounce did the trick for him. India was reduced for 173 for five, until Kedar Jadhav and Hardik Pandya took the crease.

Two young guns then took it upon them to seal the series for India. Thanks to couple of mistimed edges and wild strides towards on side helped the pair notch up a 106-run partnership for the sixth wicket. In the process, both of them completed their half centuries. All-rounder Ben Stokes then broke the partnership by cleaning off Pandya for 56.

Ravindra Jadeja in his small cameo, scored 10 off 6 balls to keep India in the chase, but gave his wicket to Chris Woakes. Ravichandran Ashwin then walked off the next over for just one.

Jadhav, like his innings in Pune, hammered the English bowlers all around the park and kept his team in the game until the penultimate ball of the match, where he got out at deep point off Chris Woakes’ bowling, after smashing 10 off the first two balls.

Kedar Jadhav scored a brilliant 90 off 75 balls but couldn’t help his side cross the finishing line.

With six to win off the last ball, Woakes found no bat as ball travelled to the wicket-keeper and the visitors registered their first win of the tour by five runs.
