India vs England 2016/17, 3rd ODI, Kolkata: Upbeat Hosts Eye Clean Sweep Against Struggling Visitors

After coming agonisingly close to winning the last two matches, England will be desperately looking to salvage some pride and avoid a whitewash when they take on confident India in the third and final ODI of the ongoing series in Eden Gardens.

After India chased down 350 in the first match in Pune, the visitors were looking destined to chase down 381 in the second ODI to level the series before eventually falling short by 15 runs. The visitors are yet to win a match on the tour, having previously lost the Test series 4-0.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli’s men will be eyeing to close the series on a high. This will be their last ODI match before they go to England for the Champions Trophy in June and it is unlikely that the hosts will treat the match lightly.

Meanwhile, the final match might become a low-scoring affair on the recently-renovated Eden Gardens pitch. The last two matches have witnessed over 700 runs being scored in each game but the bowlers can heave a sigh of relief as reports are suggesting that the Eden Gardens pitch will provide ample assistance to bowlers. The track on which the match will be played had already witnessed a low-scoring match during the Ranji Trophy match this term when Delhi were bowled out for only 90 and 164 in their two innings by Karnataka. In reply, Karnataka scored 414 runs but the bowlers can take heart from the fact that the pitch will most probably not be a batting paradise.

Team news:

India:

Out of form opener Shikhar Dhawan is doubtful for the dead rubber after suffering an injury on his left thumb. The Delhi opener has scored only 12 runs in the series so far and his injury might give the team an opportunity to give Ajinkya Rahane a chance.

England:

Alex Hales has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour after suffering a hand fracture. He injured his right hand during the second one-day international in Cuttack.

Teams:

India: Virat Kohli (c), KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Amit Mishra.

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Jason Roy, Joe Root, Jos Buttler (wk), Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Jake Ball, Liam Dawson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Billings, Liam Plunkett.
