There was a change in venue, condition and the bowling line-up of Indian cricket team but the thing which did not move an inch was the misery of England cricket team. Once again, the top order was flattened by Indian bowlers.

It was the 32nd delivery of the first day at Chennai which had nothing special in it but a greediness to drive it through the covers, made Jennings throw away his crucial wicket right at the start of the day. It was a marvellous comeback for Ishant Sharma, who is coming fresh from his marriage and is making a comeback in the Indian team after missing New Zealand Tests and 80 percent part of this series as well. It was a poor judgement from Jennings to go after it. This was a test of patience for him, in which he failed.
Soon after, an early realisation made Virat Kohli bring in Ravindra Jadeja to roll his arm against his bunny ‘Alastair Cook’, who accomplished a marvellous record on the first bowl of the day as he got his name registered in the list of players with 11000 runs in Test cricket. However, the astonishing record was not an end of his misery as Ravindra Jadeja was troubled him and soon was able to get an edge of his bat which went to first slip at Virat Kohli, who for once, showed no intention to move left or right,  and pouched the catch easily to end the inning of Alastair Cook. Cook, when caught by Kohli, had scored just 10 runs.

Vice-captain Joe Root and all-rounder Moeen Ali then realised the need of the hour and blunted Indian spin, keeping Indian bowlers wicketless for next 17 overs bowled in the session. In between, there were some chances, half-chances, edges and appeals but the duo of Ali and Root survived against the odds to somehow deny any other honour to Indian bowlers.

Earlier in the day, Indian skipper Virat Kohli surprised everyone by swapping Bhuvneshwar Kumar with Ishant Sharma. Though Bhuvenshwar scalped just one wicket in the last game, he took two fifers in last three Test matches he played before this one. It was a surprising decision from the skipper. There was also one forced change in the team as Jayant Yadav had a hamstring niggle and was replace by Amit Mishra.

England also handed a debut to Liam Dawson while Stuart Broad made a comeback in the team after being declared fit before the start of the day. Broad replaced Anderson.
