India vs England Day 1, Fourth Test: Statistical Review

On the opening day of the Fourth Test between India and England at Mumbai. England batsmen showed some solid batting performances against the Indian bowlers. After winning the toss, England decided to bat first. At the stumps on the opening day, England were at 288/5.

Here are some statistical highlights of day 1 of the 4th Test:
- On the opening day, England skipper Alaister Cook completed his 2,000 Test runs against India. Cook became the first England batsman and first opening batsman to score 2,000+ Test runs against India.
In India and England Test encounters, Cook became the third batsman to score 2,000+ Test runs (other two were Indian batsmen; Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar).
Also, Cook became 6th batsman to score 2,000+ Test runs against India.
- After scoring 46 runs, England skipper Alaister Cook was dismissed via a stumping. It was the second time when Cook is stumped in a Test match on the Indian soil and both as an English captain. Cook became the first Test captain to be stumped more than once on the Indian soil. Even no Indian Test captain has been stumped more than once on the Indian soil.
- Debutant English batsman Keaton Jennings made international debut in this Test and hit a century in the very first innings of the match as he scored 112 runs before being dismissed. Jennings became the first English cricketer to score a century in the very 1st innings of their debutant Test match against India (not confused with England’s first innings of their debut Test match).
Also, Jennings became the 19th English cricketer to score a century on a debut Test match and also became the 3rd English cricketer to score a century on a debut Test match against India.
- After dismissing Moeen Ali, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the 7th highest wicket-taking Test bowler for India surpassing Javagal Srinath (236 Test wickets). At the end of day 1, Ashwin has taken 239 Test wickets.
