India vs England Day 2, Fourth Test: Statistical Review

On the day 2 of the fourth Test between India vs England at Mumbai, Indian batsmen replied strongly against the English bowlers. Begging the day on an overnight score 288/5, England made 400 before getting bowled out.

In reply, India scored 146/1 at the stumps of the day. At the end of the day, India is still trail by 254 runs from England’s 1st inning total.

Here are some statistical highlights of day 2 of the 4th Test:

1. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bowled well in the first innings of this Test as his final bowling figure in that inning was 44-4-112-6. It was Ashwin’s 23rd 5-wicket haul in his Test career which is the joint third most no. of 5-wicket haul in a Test inning by an Indian bowler. Ashwin is now at par with former Indian pacer Kapil Dev, who had also claimed 23 times 5-wicket haul in his Test career. The other top two in this list are Anil Kumble (35 times) and Harbhajan Singh (25 times).

Also this (6/112) was Ashwin’s 18th 5-wicket haul in his Test career in India which is the joint second most no. of 5-wicket haul in a Test innings on Indian soil. Ashwin equalled with another Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh’s record who has also claimed 18 times 5-wicket haul in his home Test career. Former Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble is on top of this list with 25 times 5-wicket haul in his home Test career.

2. England were bundled out for 400 runs in the first innings of this Test. It was England’s 3rd 400+ total in a Test innings at Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai).

3. During England’s innings in the first innings of this Test, Indian spinners took all the 10 wickets. It was the second time when Indian spinners took all the 10 wickets in the 1st innings of a Test match against England. The first one was at Chennai in 1973.

Also, this was 8th time where Indian spinners took all the 10 wickets in the 1st innings of a Test.
