India replied strongly against England on day 3 of the 5th Test at Chennai. India began the day on their overnight score of 60/0 and made 391/4 at the stumps of the day. At the end of the day, India is still behind by 86 runs from England’s first innings total.

- Indian opening batsman KL Rahul scored 150+ during India’ 1st innings in this Test. It was KL Rahul’s 2nd 150+ Test score in 2016 while the first one was against West Indies (158) at Kingston. Rahul became the first Test opening batsman in 2016 to score 150+ more than one occasion. Pakistan opening batsman Azhar Ali and Australian opening batsman Joe Burns played 150+ Test knock for once each in 2016.
- Indian batsmen KL Rahul and Karun Nair put on an impressive 161-run partnership for the 4th wicket. It was the 2nd highest 4th wicket Test partnership for India against England in India. India’s highest 4th wicket Test partnership against England in India is 190 between Mohinder Amarnath and Mohammad Azharuddin at Chennai in 1985.
- Indian opening batsman KL Rahul was dismissed on unlucky 199 runs. Rahul became the 2nd Indian batsman to dismiss on 199 runs in a Test innings. Mohammad Azharuddin (against Sri Lanka at Kanpur in 1986) was the first Indian batsman to dismiss on 199 runs in a Test innings.
Also, KL Rahul became 4th Test opener and 9th Test batsman to dismiss on 199 runs.
Also, KL Rahul’s 199 was the second highest Test innings score by an Indian opening batsman against England. The highest Test innings score by an Indian opening batsman against England is 221 by Sunil Gavaskar at The Oval in 1979.
