India Vs England, Day 3: Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay’s Tons Put India On Top

Virat Kohli and Murali Vijay’s centuries put India in a strong position against England’s first-innings total of 400 at the Wankhede as English spinners sent down marathon of overs which was equally responded by young Jayant Yadav and ‘King’ Kohli’s unbeaten 87-run partnership at the stumps on Day 3.

England had their opportunities, on an otherwise disappointing day, in form of a stumping of Vijay, a drop catch of Kohli and Yadav. Had England latched on to chances the day would have been a lot different for the visitors.

The post-tea session completely belonged to India as the host is leading by 51 runs with three wickets in hand. India started on an overnight score of 146 for 1 and reached 451 for 7.

Effective at the crease, Yadav has faced 86 balls to score 30 runs to give his full support to captain Kohli who sits well on 147 runs off 241 balls.

Meanwhile, Indian lower-order batsman survived a strangle down the legside off Adil Rashid’s bowling. When replays indicated the ball had deflected off the bat. You can watch the video here:

Kohli continues to plunder runs as English total was overhauled before the end of the day’s play. The lead might easily stretch over 100 which solely depends on how India bats on the morning of Day 4.

English fast bowlers tried hard while dishing out the bouncers which were flayed by Virat and Co. However, Alastair Cook led side would definitely like to take things under control as soon as possible.

Vijay was caught on his own bowling by Adil Rashid on 136 before Kohli hit his 15th Test century.

Piling on misery, Kohli and Vijay gets scoreboard ticking and put the pressure back on the visitors before Vijay got to his eighth century and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with crucial 25 runs to steady the ship when India was tottering on 307 for 6.

Without doing much, Karun Nair was caught in front of the stumps by Moeen Ali scoring just 13 off 18 balls.

Parthiv Patel (15), who took a jibe on England spinners the other day, was undone by part-timer bowler Joe Root who brought himself to bowl when Alastair Cook went out of the field. This would be definitely a part of the discussion among the social media users.

Root sent down 8 overs while conceding 18 runs for 2 wickets which includes Ravichandran Ashwin (0).

Taking a look at the records, Virat Kohli completed 4,000 career Test runs which include 2,000 as a captain out of which 1,000 came only in 2016.

Kohli reached the mark when he got to 41 runs during his first innings. He was unbeaten on 44 runs at lunch on the third day to continue smashing the English seamers and spinners with his wide array of shots.

Kohli achieved this feat in 89th innings of his 52nd Test and became the sixth fastest Indian to reach the milestone. Former Indian veteran Virender Sehwag is the fastest Indian to cross the mark in his 79th inning.

BCCI’s appreciative tweet for Virat Kohli:

Earlier, on the second ball of the day, Cheteshwar Pujara was bowled by Jake Ball on 47 while leaving the ball and falling just three runs short of a half-century.

Interesting enough, spinners have picked so far 16 wickets and only wicket went the seamer in the form of Pujara.

India’s scorecard was 247 for 2 at lunch and 348 for 6 at Tea. Team India is leading the five-Test match series 2-0.

Brief Scores:

India: 451 for 7 in 142 overs

England: 400 allout in 130.1 overs

India is leading by 51 runs…
