India vs England Day 4 First Test – Statistical Review

At the close of day 4 of the first Test between India and England at Rajkot, the Test match is increasingly looking a drawn game. India were bowled out for 488 runs after they began the day with their overnight score of 319/4. After the end of India’s first innings, England took a 49-run lead over the hosts India .

England began their second innings on a positive note as they were 114/0 at the stumps of day 4. At the end of day 4, England has taken a 163-run lead over India.

Here are some statistical highlights of day 4 of the 1st Test:

  1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli was dismissed hit wicket after scoring 40 runs. He is the second Indian captain to dismiss via a hit-wicket. The first Indian captain was Lala Amarnath to be dismissed through hit wicket. He got out against West Indies at Chennai in 1949.

Kohli also became the third Indian cricketer to be dismissed through hit wicket more than once in their international career. The other two Indian batsmen are Mohinder Amarnath (3 times dismissed through hit wicket) and Nayan Mongia (2 times dismissed through hit-wicket).

 

  1. Indian no. 7 batsman Ravichandran Ashwin scored a crucial 70 runs before getting out. It was the 5th highest Test score by a no.7 Indian batsman against England in India.

 

  1. India was bowled out for 488 runs. It was India’s 5th highest total in a Test innings against England on Indian soil. Also, this 488-runs was India’s second highest 2nd innings Test total against England on Indian soil.

 

  1. England earned a 49-run lead at the end of the first innings. Before this Test, last time an overseas team had earned the first innings lead on Indian soil was also England at Nagpur in 2012, where England took 4-run lead in the 1st innings against India.

 

  1. England spinners took a total of 8 wickets during India’s first innings of this Test. It was the 13th time where England spinners took total 8 or more wickets in a Test innings on Indian soil.

 

  1. Debutant English opening batsman Haseeb Hameed is playing a good knock in England’s second innings. At the end of the day, he was not out on 62 runs. Hameed became 3rd youngest English batsman and 2nd youngest English opener to score 50+ runs in a Test innings.
