India vs England Day One, Third Test: Statistical Review

On the day one of the third Test between India and England at Mohali, India had an advantage over visitors. England decided to bat first after winning the toss. At the stumps on the opening day, England was 268/8.

- Indian cricketer Karun Nair made his Test debut in this Test. He becomes India’s 287th Test cricketer.
- In this Test, Indian wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel made a Test comeback after 8 years and 107 days later. Parthiv’s this Test comeback was the second longest intervals between Test appearances as an Indian wicket-keeper. Former Indian wicket-keeper Dattaram Hindlekar (9 year and 357 days) holds the record of longest intervals between Test appearances as an Indian wicket-keeper.
- On the opening day, England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow scored another Test half-century. It was Bairstow’s 10th 50+ Test score in 2016, which is jointly most no.of 50+ Test score by a batsman in 2016. Teammate Joe Root is the another batsman who achieved this feat before Bairstow.
Also, Bairstow only the third Test batsmen at no.5 or lower than to score 10 times 50+ in a calendar year. Other two batsmen who had achieved this feat are Shivnarine Chanderpaul (in 2002) and Angelo Mathews (in 2014).
- England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow played very impressively and scored 89 runs before getting dismissed. It was the third highest Test score (in an innings) by an English wicketkeeper-batsman on the Indian soil. The top two scores in this list are 92 by Dick Spooner (at Kolkata in 1951) and 91 by Matt Prior (at Ahmedabad in 2012).
