The day 1 of the first Test match of India vs West Indies was filled with surprises, records, stories and few good performances from the players. Virat Kohli emerged as the star for the Indian team as he once again led the team from the front and helped the team when it was stuck in a difficult situation. He scored a timely century to ensure that team India finishes the day with a good total in the evening. Indian team ended the day with the score of 302/4.
There were few highlights of the day which surely no one can afford to miss; we bring you a summary of those moments –
The Sir Jadeja exclusion – This decision really came out of the box as captain Kohli decided to bench the Indian all-rounder Ravinder Jadeja in favour of leg-spinner Amit Mishra, which came as a surprise to the fans. Surely Mishra is a good spinner but Jadeja enjoyed quite a success in the last Test series he played. He was actually preferred over Mishra in the home series against South Africa last year where he justified his selection with the bunch of wickets but today his exclusion stunned his fans. Surely he deserved to be there in the playing XI as he showed great intent in the practise game he played against the West Indies board Presidents XI.
Vijay’s early dismissal – Much was expected from the Indian opener Murali Vijay but he continued his poor form against the West Indies team and went back to the pavilion on the personal score of 7 runs before giving an easy catch at the slips which the fielder caught after some fumbles. This dismissal was a big blow for the team as he one of the assets of the team in this format but today was not his day and he got out early on a low score.
Shikhar Dhawan’s 84 – Dhawan’s inclusion in the team ahead of KL Rahul was not a surprise as Virat Kohli gave a clear indication regarding this yesterday itself. Dhawan had some mental pressure in mind to perform so as to safeguard his place for the upcoming Test matches and Dhawan passed the first test as he went on to score 84 runs before losing his wicket to Devendra Bishoo in the form of LBW. He along with captain Kohli provided the much-needed momentum to the team and shared a partnership worth 105 runs to rescue the team from a difficult situation.
Kohli’s 3000 milestone followed by a brave ton – Virat Kohli added another feather to his cap as the captain went past 3000 runs in the longest format of the game but that was not all and he went on to score a ton in the same innings. He overcame his past memory of West Indies and bounced back strongly. He along with Shikhar Dhawan stitched a crucial partnership of over 100 runs to sail the team into an ideal position.
Ashwin ahead of Saha – The pictures on television gave us a little idea about this that Ashwin may be coming ahead of Saha to bat but nothing was fixed till he actually came to bat before the wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha. It was pretty shocking to see this as no expected this to happen. Though Ashwin has two centuries to his name in this format but by no means can he overtake Saha in this line. Captain Kohli had already decided to elevate Ashwin in the batting order as a result; he came to bat before Wriddhiman Saha. He too played few shots and justified his promotion in the batting order.Tomorrow he will be out in the middle with an eye on another half century.
