The Indian Premier League: Injured XI

Before the start of the current IPL season, there was talk about an overdose of T20 cricket with the recently concluded WT20 and the Asia Cup in quick succession.

But the quality and entertainment of the sport have kept the 9th version of the grand-slam T20 domestic tournament in India that is the IPL.

However, the amount of cricket has now taken its toll on the cricketers giving yet another notion for the critics of the annual competition. As many as 14 big-name players have been injured since the start of this season of the IPL and with the business end coming up, the list might only get bigger.

It will be a big blow for the franchises in the competitions and also for the national sides if the injuries are long-term. Here is a team with IPL players who have missed this season due to injuries:

Shaun Marsh (Kings XI Punjab):

The classy Australian opening batsman Shaun Marsh was ruled out of the rest of the IPL season and is heading back to Australia after aggravating a previously picked up injury in the game against Gujarat Lions recently.

He has scored 159 runs in 6 games for the franchise who are already looking for replacements but as the bottom-placed side, the KIXP franchise will need a quality player to get them out of the dump.

Lendl Simmons (Mumbai Indians):

The highest run-getter for the franchise last season, Simmons had a fascinating recall into the West Indies side for the recently concluded World T20. He was called back after an injury to Andre Fletcher and scored an unbeaten 82 that sent India, the hosts of the tournament crashing out in the semi-final.

However, his back problem was not completely relieved and had to head back to the Caribbean even before the tournament started. There is a slim chance that he might be recalled if desperately needed.

Steve Smith (Rising Pune Supergiants):

In what came as a big blow recently for the newly set-up Pune franchise, the in-form Australian skipper Steve Smith picked up a wrist injury that saw him leave to his country and will be skipping the rest of the season before he can be completely fit again.

The 26-year old carried his form for Australian into the IPL and scored 270 runs in just 7 innings at an average of 45. He also scored a century and will be dearly missed by Dhoni’s side.

Faf du Plessis (Rising Pune Supergiants):

Another player from the same franchise, South Africa’s Faf du Plessis was one of the first players from the team to pick up an injury. He was in superb form at the start of the tournament and scored two half-centuries in the first three games.

However, he had to go back to South Africa to nurse a broken finger and will not play any more part in the current season of the IPL.

Kevin Pietersen (Rising Pune Supergiants):

Completing the middle order for our team is the other player from the same franchise who fell prey to the injury plague. England international Kevin Pietersen who scored 73 runs in his first 4 innings for the team was ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury.

During the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore, KP looked uncomfortable after playing a sharp delivery from Kane Richardson and that seems to have aggravated a previous injury that broke him down.

Marsh-405x270

Mitchell Marsh (Rising Pune Supergiants):

Yet another player from the same outfit, continuing the horrible debut season, Mitchell Marsh was ruled out after just recently.

The four foreign players who played the first game for the RPS franchise (Faf du Plessis, Steve Smith, Kevin Pietersen the other three) are now out of the tournament leaving Dhoni with a mountain to climb. They are vigorously searching for replacements and will have to take action quickly with the points table tightening up.

John Hastings (Kolkata Knight Riders):

Starting the current season of the IPL with figures of 2-6 in 2.4 overs, Australia’s hefty all-rounder ended his season just a game later with an ankle injury.

Recent reports have suggested that the injury might be more severe than initially diagnosed leaving Hastings with a race to be fit for the tri-series in West Indies. The franchise, however, has not felt the wrath of his injury and have been decent in the tournament so far.

Samuel Badree (Royal Challengers Bangalore):

After a stupendous time in the World T20, the miserly leg-spinner broke his shoulder against England in the finals and eventually ended any chance of playing for RCB in the IPL this season.

The RCB batting line-up is one of the best in the business but their bowling line-up has often been criticized and the loss of Badree meant that they were short of match-winners with the ball. Though his replacement, Tabraiz Shamsi has been catching the eye, Kohli, and his team have missed the West Indian dearly.

Mitchell Starc (Royal Challengers Bangalore):

Out of all the teams missing their stars through injury, the biggest loss has been that of the Australian pacer for the Bangalore franchise.

Destructive even when not on song, Starc had a very busy season before the World T20 and played no part in Australia in the competition after picking up an ankle injury way back in December. Surely, RCB would have been a harder team to beat with the likes of Starc and Badree playing at their best.

Joel Paris (Delhi Daredevils):

The exciting fast bowler from Australia was snatched up by the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL auction and it seemed like the 23-year old was a big part of the plan at the franchise in the capital city.

Paris, unfortunately, picked up a stress fracture on his shin just before the IPL opening ceremony which ruled him out of the tournament instantly but the DD side have been able to put more than decent performances and have not missed his services too much.

Lasith Malinga (Mumbai Indians):

The lethal and deadly Yorkers of the Sri Lankan genius Lasith Malinga were a part of the IPL’s attractions annually but this season, the 32-year old has not been able to get himself fit for the cash-rich tournament.

Having played his last ODI back in November 2015 Malinga who picked up an injury during that game was back in the Asia Cup for just a game. But it was evident that he was still not fit enough and later it was revealed that he would miss 6 more months of competitive cricket.

Surely, Rohit Sharma’s burden at the Mumbai franchise would have reduced with the 32-year old in the team.

yuvraj

Yuvraj Singh (Sunrisers Hyderabad):

In a bid to strengthen their fragile batting line-up, the south-India franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad bid for the fierce Yuvraj Sing in the auction this year.

However, the joy was short-lived after the 34-year old picked up a back injury in the World T20 game against Australia. As a result, Yuvraj missed out on the semi-final against West Indies and played no part in the IPL so far. However, he is set to make a comeback for his side on the 6th of this month for his side’s match against the Gujarat Lions and will make take the place of the 12th man in our team of players who are injured this IPL season.
