Indian Women’s Squad For ICC World Cup 2017 Announced

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced the squad for the 11th ICC Women’s World Cup, to be held between June 24 and July 23.

The All-India Women’s Selection Committee met earlier today to select the India Women’s Cricket Team for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup 2017.

February saw matches for qualification in ICC women’s world cup. The final was contested between India and South Africa, with India winning by 1 wicket. Along with the two finalists, both Sri Lanka and Pakistan have qualified for the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup. As well as the four qualifiers for the Cricket World Cup, Bangladesh and Ireland kept their ODI status until 2021 by virtue of them reaching the Super Six stage of the tournament. Mona Meshram replaced Smriti Mandhana in India’s squad after Mandhana was injured during a match in the 2016-17 Women’s Big Bash League,  but now the 20-year-old Smriti makes a comeback. Later, both Jhulan and Sukanya were also ruled out of India’s squad due to injury. They were replaced by Soni Yadav and Mansi Joshi respectively.

On 8 February 2016, the ICC announced the five venues for the 2017 Women’s World Cup. Lord’s will host the final, and other matches will be played at the home grounds of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Somerset and Gloucestershire.

Veteran batswoman Mithali Raj will captain the side that will compete in the eight-team competition Britain.

India has never won the trophy. They finished runners-up in 2005 to Australia.
The squad:
Mithali Raj (Captain), Harmanpreet Kaur, Veda Krishnamurthy, Mona Meshram, Punam Raut, Deepti Sharma, Jhulan Goswami, Shikha Pandey, Ekta Bisht, Sushma Verma, Mansi Joshi, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Nuzhat Parveen, Smriti Mandhana.
India will be hoping to do much better than their previous outing at the biggest stage of them all when playing at home, they surrendered meekly finishing bottom of the points table in a group which featured Sri Lanka, England, and the West Indies.
The squad boasts of many fine players but the focus will be on Deepti Sharma, who scored a mammoth 188 against Ireland Women – the second highest individual score ever in the history of women’s cricket. Also keen to make an impression will be Jhulan Goswami who has made a good comeback from injury picking up four wickets from two matches in the ongoing quadrangular series involving Ireland, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
India begins their World Cup campaign against hosts England on June 24 in Derby where they will be hope to make a winning start en route to the final which will be played on July 23 in London.
