Hard-hitting batsman Chris Gayle has been ruled out of the South African Tests due to injury. WICB said in a statement that he “has been ruled out due to injury” without offering any further details.

Gayle hasn’t featured at the international stage since September. His lower back injury had also kept him out of the curtailed Indian tour in October. However, he did return to competitive cricket by signing up for Highveld Lions in Ram Slam T20 Challenge, scoring two fifties and a hundred in the first three games, but he got injured after that.

Devon Smith has been called as the replacement for Chris Gayle for the Tests.

West Indies are scheduled to begin their tour with a three-day game in Benoni on December 10, before starting the first of three Test matches on December 17, in Centurion.
