Instances after 2011 World Cup that changed future of Indian team!

Indian team has undergone a major revamp after the world cup 2011, both the openers of the Indian team viz Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag have announced retirements, Gambhir is no longer a member of Indian team, Yuvi hasn’t played any ODI in past 3 years, Zaheer khan has retired and the rest are playing in domestic cricket still trying to get into the team. Post the World cup 2011 the Indian has changed a lot, some new heroes have emerged, some has fallen down and some like Suresh Raina have been consistent, regularly in and out of the team.

During these 5 years, there were moments of joy, sorrow and some emotional moments too but there were few instances which added more strength in the Indian team and it is the fruit of that strength which Indian team is winning more matches now.

We take a glimpse of that instances which changes the future of team India –

india tour of sri lanka

The Sri Lanka tour in 2012 – In the month of July 2012, the Indian team visited Sri Lanka to play 5 matches ODI series against the hosts. The Indian team won the series by a big margin of 4-1. Winning the series was an obvious joy for Indian team but on this series there emerged a new player who was playing for India from past 4 years but never caught our eye, the player was Virat Kohli.

Though he was performing well in One-day format but was inconsistent at all times. In this series, he scored 296 runs in 5 matches at an average of 74.00 which included 2 centuries, both in a winning cause. Since then he has been a consistent performer for Indian team and now he is the captain of Indian team and one of the best batsman in the world. It can be said that the Sri Lanka tour turned fortunes for Virat Kohli.

Australia tour of India 2013 (Feb/March) – Indian team is always considered a bully on home soil but England team broke that myth on their visit to the country in the year 2012 when they travelled the country to participate in four matches Test series. England team despite losing the first game came back in strongly winning next two encounters and forcing the last one to end in a draw. They countered Indian team on own soil and India’s idea of creating turning wickets backfired. A few months later the Australia team toured India with a feeling of replicating their biggest rival England but the formula didn’t work. Indian team learned from mistakes and white washed Aussies. It was a great comeback from the Indian team. From then Indian team is yet to lose a Test match on home soil.

champions trophy

Champion Trophy 2013 – It was the biggest turnaround for Indian team after world cup as playing on England soil, where Indian team lost everything on their England tour in 2011, the Indian team went on to win Champions trophy by defeating England in the final. It was the biggest revenge taken by a team as winning the ICC trophy by defeating host in the final.

Indian team found a new opening pair in form of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma. For next 2 and a half year both of them played their role brilliantly but in past few months the form of Shikhar Dhawan has dropped down at an alarming rate and he has already been replaced with KL Rahul in Test and T20’s. We may see him getting replaced in ODI’s too. Still, Shikhar Dhawan has a long career to go and he will get many opportunities to get back in the Indian team.

The India tour to Australia 2014 (Test series) – India toured Australia in the year 2014 in December and January. The Indian team though failed to register a win in the Test series but learnt a lot in this series. They learnt how to give fight in matches, how not to surrender in front of opposition team and also they got an aggressive captain who replaced M.S. Dhoni.

Miffed with India’s poor record in overseas, Dhoni called it for the day handing over reins to Kohli. Virat Kohli from then has been quite successful for Indian team and is yet to lose a Test series in past 1 and a half years of his captaincy. This tour taught Indians how to fight and chase the target regardless of the end results

India tour of Bangladesh 2015 (ODI series) – It is said that a loss teaches you more lessons than a win. Maybe it is true or not but it is definitely true if we use it for Indian cricket team who had a horrible show in Bangladesh in ODI series of 2015. Mustafizur alone ran over Indian batting line taking 13 wickets in his debut series in just three matches.

Indian team lost the series by a margin of 2-1 but learnt a lot and result was seen in Asia cup 2016. The Indian team remained unbeaten in the Asia cup which was played in Bangladesh. In fact, the Indian team defeated by Bangladesh twice including the final of the Asia cup. The team learnt from its past series and applied the knowledge in the Asia cup.
