India finally ended their misery in overseas test matches as the Virat Kohli led side defeated Sri Lanka by 117 runs in the third test to clinch the series 2-1. The best part for the Indians was that they won the series after being 0-1 down at Galle. Post that defeat at Galle, the Indians were obviously more charged up and looked far more focused in the last 2 tests.
Entering the fifth day, the Indians were always the favorites to win the game, but a stubborn knock from Sri Lankan skipper Angello Mathews kept the Indian bowlers at bay for a long time. At one point in time during the afternoon session, the Sri Lankans also thought of a victory as debutant Kusal Perera along with Mathews changed gears rapidly. The game was slipping away from the visitors, before Perera played a mind numbing reserve sweep to hand India the initiative. From then on, it was just a matter of time before the formalities were accomplished.
Amit Mishra got the last wicket and the Indian celebrations thus began. Cheteshwar Pujara was named the Man of the Match for his solid knock in the first innings. The Man of the series award was given to R. Ashwin for his stellar bowling displays as he ended up with 21 wickets.
