Former Pakistan batsman and legend Inzamam Ul Haq is a front-runner for the job of the national selector for Pakistan. The PCB recently disbanded the previous selection committee, after the team endured horrible outings in the T20 Asia Cup and the World T20.
Inzamam, often regarded as a shrewd and smart thinker, is likely to be named as the chief selector for the Pakistanis. PCB chairman Shahryar Khan had a meeting with Haq, and spoke at length about his proposed role and the implications which would lie within. Haq in the past also served as a batting consultant for Pakistan, before the team’s 2012 tour of India.
An official within the PCB confirmed that Shahryar had met Inzamam to discuss his likely role. “Shaharyar has offered Inzamam the chief selector’s position and also agreed to some points raised by the former captain who is now head coach of the Afghanistan team. He has also asked for time so that he can speak to the Afghanistan cricket officials and reach an amicable agreement with them as he does not want to leave them in acrimonious circumstances,” the source said.
The news of Inzamam becoming the chief selector was embraced by former batsman Mohammad Yousuf, as he said, “I think they are both ideal choices for this post as we need those people in the chain of command who have played modern day cricket and understand the importance of promoting and grooming new talent.”
However, another official in the board dismissed the news, stating, “Look nothing is final as yet that is for sure. Shaharyar is presently in the process of talking to likely candidates and Inzamam and Rashid are among them. But it is wrong to say Inzamam has been finalised as chief selector. Obviously, the board will have to match that amount (USD 12,000) if it ropes him in. But so far nothing is final and the only thing confirmed is that Inzamam has shown interest in the job,” the official said.
