Kolkata Knight Riders move a step closer to secure a knock out berth as they defeated Delhi Daredevils by 13 runs at the Eden Gardens. With this win, Kolkata climb to the third spot with 13 points from 11 matches. This match also marked the return of Sunil Narine, who was cleared of his suspect bowling action by the BCCI. Narine was one of the four spinners played by Knight Riders.
Chasing 172 to win, Delhi openers Manoj Tiwary and Shreyas Iyer got off to a slow start as they failed to make use of the field restriction overs in which they managed only 36. Iyer cut loose after the first six overs as played the spinners with ease before both Tiwary and Iyer were dismissed for 25 and 40 respectively with the scorecard reading 71-2 after 11 overs.
Kedar Jadhav and JP Duminy did some repair works as they took on the spinners. In doing so, Jadhav was dismissed for 10 caught by Johan Botha off Piyush Chawla before Yuvraj Singh was caught by Andre Russell off Chawla for a duck. Chawla came back and dismissed Duminy that sealed the game in favour of the hosts. Eventually Delhi managed to score 158-6 in their 20 overs.
Earlier put into bat, Kolkata scored 171-7 in 20 overs courtesy Robin Uthappa’s 32, Yusuf Pathan’s 42 along Johan Botha’s 17 off 5 that came in the last over bowled by Zaheer Khan that proved to be the turning point in the match. Chawla was named the Man of the Match for his figures of 4-32 in 4 overs and a 19 ball 22 with the bat.
