IPL 2016 – Captain’s ratings

IPL 2016 was one of the closest editions of all time, as a majority of the teams seemed quite strong and churned out some memorable performances. Over the due course of the tournament, viewers witnessed some spectacular team displays. With Sunrisers Hyderabad emerging as the winners of the tournament, it just highlighted the need to have a balanced unit with equality with the bat and ball.

It is often said that the effectiveness of a captain becomes the foundation for success in T20 cricket. In the shortest form of the game, the leader of the side plays a crucial role in gaining an upper hand due to some tactical brilliance on field. Focusing mainly on captaincy, we rate the skippers of the IPL teams for this edition. In this rating, equal weightage is given to a captain’s individual performance in order to boost the team, and his effectiveness as an on field leader.

  1. David Warner (9.5/10):

Warner was the ideal instance of a perfect leader in this edition. The southpaw instilled positives within the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had a poor start to their campaign after losing the first couple of games. With 848 runs in 17 matches, Warner was second only to the dashing Virat Kohli in terms of the runs scored. But apart from his destructive batting, it was Warner’s on field tactics which played a key part. In the second half of the tournament, Warner gathered his resources way too efficiently. His handling of players such as Ben Cutting and Moises Henriques played a crucial part behind the glory achieved by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

  1. Virat Kohli (9/10):

If there was one man, who deserved the sympathies of millions, it would definitely be Virat Kohli. With a jaw dropping aggregate of 973 runs in the tournament, Kohli surely gets full marks for leading from the front. Scoring four hundreds in just a single edition is like living a dream and Kohli made it look ridiculously easy. Kohli has a tick in front of most of the boxes when it comes to captaincy and his leadership would have been even more effective, had his bowlers supported him even a little more.

  1. Suresh Raina (7.5/10):

As compared to his previous season, this was a great one for Suresh Raina, who enjoyed leading the Gujarat Lions. Raina had a memorable campaign with 399 runs to his list and for a captain leading a side for the first time in a season, the southpaw was very good. His batting could have been more impactful had he converted his starts. But as a leader, Raina was really effective, and his way of using Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni deserves a mention.

  1. Gautam Gambhir (7.5/10):

He might have been absent from the international arena for quite some time, but Gambhir was on the money in this edition. From the bat, Gambhir led Knight Riders’ charge with 501 runs to his name including five scores in excess of 50. His leadership was once again quite crisp and aggression was made well use off. However, Gambhir’s form faded a bit during the latter half and that could have potentially been a spoiler for the Knight Riders.

  1. Rohit Sharma (7/10):

Considering his last few seasons as a skipper, this was a disappointing edition for the elegant Rohit Sharma. From the bat, Rohit scored 489 runs at a healthy average, but agonizingly, that wasn’t enough for the Mumbai Indians to make it to the playoffs. Rohit’s performance in the first innings throughout the tournament was quite underwhelming and that had an adverse impact for the Mumbai Indians. His policy of not trying out the likes of Nathu Singh and Corey Anderson would be another negative point.

  1. Zaheer Khan (8/10):

In his last IPL season, Zaheer might not have set the stage on fire with the ball, but as a leader, Zaheer was simply outstanding. His leadership skills against the Mumbai Indians at Delhi were remarkable indeed as he made precise use of his bowlers to choke the opposition. Zaheer’s astute captaincy would be another reason behind why this particular season of the IPL would be remembered a lot.

  1. MS Dhoni (6/10):

Contrasting to his previous stints, this was the most forgettable outing for captain cool. Dhoni as a leader seemed nowhere near his best, but then he himself has to take the blame for that. His bowlers let him down terribly for sure, but Dhoni himself was responsible for not fielding the best XI on a few occasions. His handling of the batting order was quite flawed and he was guilty of committing some tactical errors.

  1. M. Vijay, D. Miller (3/10):

As the Kings XI Punjab were led by two individuals, we average out the ratings. While Miller was a total disaster as a skipper, Vijay seemed quite effective and did his best in order to generate some hope for the Punjabis. However, by the time he was appointed the captain, it was way too late, and that pretty much summed up Kings XI’s campaign.
