IPL 2017: 5 Players Who Can Replace R. Ashwin In The Rising Pune Supergiants Squad

Rising Pune Supergiants ’ high hopes of resurrecting their IPL reputation got hit by a huge roadblock as star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, their spin bowling spearhead, was ruled out of the upcoming season due to a shoulder injury. The effects of the long season filled with heavy workload finally looked visible and the Pune franchise, unfortunately, will be the one that will suffer.

Without Ashwin, they have very limited spin options with only Adam Zampa capable of fulfilling his role. Going into the tournament with just one specialist spinner obviously seems insensible therefore it is very likely that a replacement will be soon announced by the team. The list of probable’s ready and Sportzwiki tries to evaluate the chances of the contenders.

Nathan Lyon:

Nathan Lyon, Australia’s lead off-spinner, is perhaps the best and the most suitable bowler in the list of unsold player. It was a surprise to see him not getting picked in the auctions; maybe his completely orthodox approach made him unattractive. However, Lyon, who is a regular in the Sydney Sixers’ squad in Big Bash League, has all the abilities to get better of the batsmen in the limited overs format. As reports suggest, it could be skipper Steve Smith’s call to pick the replacement. This makes his case the strongest among all the spinner available for grabs.

Brad Hogg:

Brad Hogg, the 45-year-old left arm wrist spinner, is still as effective as he was a decade ago. Hogg, who played for the Kolkata Knight Riders for the last four seasons, was not retained by the franchise as they looked forward to grooming another young chinaman Kuldeep Yadav. Hogg promises bring along vast experience and great variations and seems like a perfect choice to replace a bowler like Ashwin who also has the same abilities. It would be wonderful to see him back in action.

Akila Dhananjaya:

Sri Lanka’s mystery man Akila Dhanajaya has an outside chance of getting picked. But, if chosen, it would be a worthy gamble as he assures good performance. Dhanajaya rose to prominence with his ability to bowl all varieties of spin – leg break, off break, googly, doosra and flipper. This superhuman skills saw him getting fast-tracked to Sri Lanka’s 2012 World T20 squad. He has played 5 T20Is and has seven wickets to his name. Unfortunately, ever since he has been away from the limelight. However, if you think he is struggling in oblivion then you are wrong. The 23-year-old is still in the reckoning and recently featured for the Sri Lanka President’s XI game against Bangladesh.

Parvez Rasool:

The first preference to replace Ravichandran Ashwin, a domestic name, should ideally go to another domestic name. In this case, J&K’s Parvez Rasool certainly fulfils the requirements. The 28-year-old is quite orthodox as compared to Ashwin but can be very economical. The off-spinner was a part of the Royal Challengers squad in the 2016 season before he was released and went unsold. What sets him apart from all other names in the list is his batting ability. Rasool is a proven batsman just like Ashwin and has a first class batting average of 38.87. His all-round capability will be a huge asset for RPSG.

Sai Kishore:

The 20-year-old Sai Kishore might just be 6 ‘List A’ matches old but he has already packed a punch above his weight. The left arm spinner might not of Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling type but can be very useful. After rising to fame in the TNPL with impressive showings (and a heated on-field tussle involving Ashwin himself), Kishore was drafted in the Tamil Nadu side for the Deodhar Trophy. The young spinner seized the opportunity and returned with 16 wickets in 6 matches with best bowling figures 4/59. It was largely due to his contributions that TN eventually ended up as the champions.
