IPL 2017 Final: Steve Smith Leaves Emotional Message Before India Departure

Steve Smith’s incredible four-month stay in India is just about to end. The journey which started with a stunning century in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar series on the rank-turner in Pune is now just one step away from getting ended on a perfect note. The Australia skipper, who was appointed as the skipper of Rising Pune Supergiant just before the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, has now led the franchise to its maiden IPL final and will be gunning for glory when his side take on Mumbai Indians in the summit clash on Sunday (May 21).

Unforgettable Test series in India:

When Australia had arrived in India, nobody had given them even an outside chance of posing a challenge for the in-form Indian team let alone winning a match. However, led by their inspirational skipper, the team from Down Under exceeded all the expectations and gave their fancied opponents a run for their money before losing the final Test to lose the series 2-1.

Smith was undoubtedly the stand-out batsman from either side as he scored 499 runs at an stunning average of over 71 including three centuries.  His 109 in the second innings in Pune was hailed by many as one of the finest knocks by a visiting batsman in India.

However, his memorable series was marred with controversies. He was embroiled in the infamous DRS controversy in the second Test when he admitted to illegally looking in the direction of the dressing room for assistance, while in the final Test he had said  “f—-ing cheat” after Murali Vijay had claimed a low catch that was later overturned by the third umpire. But he soon moved on from all the controversies and led his team remarkably well in the Indian Premier League.

Began IPL with a bang:

In the very first of the season, Smith repaid the faith shown in him by the franchise by steering his side to a thrilling win with a 84-run knock against Mumbai Indians. He continued to make useful contributions throughout the tournament and has so far scored 421 runs in 14 matches. The stage is set for him to finish the memorable sojourn in India on a good note.

The Australian star will now stay in India for a day or two before leaving for his native country in order to prepare for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. But before his departure from the subcontinent, the 27-year old has left an emotional message on his Instagram page, describing his experience in the country.

“The last 4 months here in India have been incredible. There has been some ups and downs along the way but I’ve learnt such a great deal. The Test matches were tough but so enjoyable to be a part of. I’ve met some wonderful people, and I’ve made some new friends. The IPL and playing with Pune has been a terrific experience and I look forward to spending my last night here in India battling it out in the Final. Thank you to everyone here in India that has made this trip so unforgettable. #grateful #opportunity ✌?️????,” Smith wrote on his Instagram page.
