IPL 2017: Five Teams With Most Number Of Losses In IPL

Indian Premier League, a festival of the Indian cricket is back and this time it is big as it is the tenth edition of the league, which kicked off in the year 2008 with a bang when Brendon McCullum showed the world of how a T20 tournament should start. From that day to today, we have seen ‘N’ number of players, few extra teams added, few teams getting defunct from the league but one thing stayed there constant, the love for the game.

So before we prepare for this season, I looked back and came up with a number which will tell us of the teams that have registered most number of losses in the T20 league:

Delhi Daredevils (74 losses in 133 games) – Delhi Daredevils was one of the strongest teams at the time of inception of the T20 league. The team qualified for the semi-final of the league but failed to reach the final. Next year again they qualified for the semi-final but lost in the knockout game. It was the last time in the year 2012 when they crossed the first hurdle to qualify for the second round. Delhi has just qualified for the second round only on three occasions out of 9 times.

The number of losses is the main reason behind this team failing to get going as they lost a total of 74 games out of 133, which means that they have lost a more than 50% of the games they have played. They have a poor win percentage of 43.12 in IPL. Delhi is yet to play the final of elusive T20 league.

kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab (71 losses in 134 games) – Kings XI Punjab was once one of the best contenders for winning the cup but have never been able to get their hands on the trophy. They came close to lifting the cup in the year 2014 but Kolkata Knight Riders chased down a target of 200 and stymied their quest of winning the cup.

This team can be rated one of the worst teams in IPL as they have only qualified for the semi-final of the tournament twice i.e. 2008 and 2014. On rest of the occasions, their form has been so poor that they could not really push themselves ahead.

Though their winning rate is better than Delhi Daredevils as they won a total of 71 games out of 134 contests they have participated in.

IPL 2016, DD vs RCB – Co-incidence makes RCB favourites for IPL 2016

Royal Challengers Bangalore (66 losses in 140 games) – Royal Challengers Bangalore though did not have a great start to their IPL tourney but they qualified for the final of 2009 league held in South Africa. Though they lost the final but showed a significant improvement in their form in comparison to last year. The history repeated itself seven years later as RCB again qualified for the final of the league in 2016 and again lost to a cricket franchise based from Hyderabad.

Going by numbers, their winning rate is also not pleasant as they have lost 66 games out of 140 games they have played but the thing that has gone in their favour is that they have clicked the right areas at right time, though they are yet to win the cup.

Kolkata Knight Riders (62 losses in 132 games) – The blockbuster franchise of IPL, which one could call them, has had torrid first three editions of IPL as they failed to qualify for the playoffs in the first three seasons. There were rumours of Shahrukh Khan, the co-owner of the franchise having an extra say in team meetings and combination. They revamped their squad in the main auction of 2011 and it was Vijay Dahiya who brought in Gautam Gambhir, even though franchise had to pay an amount of Rs 11.04 Crore.

The fortunes of the team took a U-turn from that day and this team has won two IPL trophies till now. A change in team brought about a change in fortune, which also helped them to improve their stats as this team have lost 62 games out of 132 times they have stepped on the field.

Mumbai Indians (60 losses in 140 games) – One of the richest teams in IPL, the oMen in Blue, features fifth in the list of most losses. The Mumbai-based franchise has lost 60 out of 140 games they have played and have registered 80 wins, which is highest among all the teams.

Till now, they ‘ve pocketed the IPL trophy twice, once in 2013 and then again in 2015. Players like Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya have had contributed their services to this team and Tendulkar, still, continues to mentor this team even today.
