IPL 2017: Gujarat Lions’ Jason Roy Unlikely To Play In Closing Stage Of The Tournament

Gujarat Lions may have to do without the services of Jason Roy in the later stage of the Indian Premier League as the England opener is mulling on not returning to India after playing the short One-Day International series against Ireland.

The Three Lions will host Ireland for two matches (May 5 and 7) and the ECB have asked Roy, Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings to play in the series but have been given the option of heading back to the IPL for the closing stages. However, Roy, who has yet not cemented his spot in the team, is not willing to to return to the subcontinent.

The flambuoyant opener has played just three matches scoring 59 runs in total and in a bid to gear himself up for the series against South Africa and the all important  ICC Champions Trophy, he is considering the option of playing for Surrey in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

“I’m discussing with Andrew Strauss, whether to come back out here to the IPL or to get cracking with Surrey in the Royal London,” said Roy.

“I think it is probably a good idea to get my head round 50-over cricket as much as possible especially if I’m not really playing a huge amount out here in India, it is just a bit of a waste really.

“I’m due to come back for the Ireland game and then after that I could have three games for Surrey before the South Africa series so that would be great preparation I think,” he added.

Roy is likely to leave for England in the first week of May and is set to miss his team’s clash against Delhi Daredevils (May 4) and Kings XI Punjab ( May 7). In case, he does not return after the series, he will also the miss Gujarat’s last two league games against Delhi Daredevils (May 10) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 13) in addition to the later stages of the tournament if the team makes it to the playoffs.

He further rued the lack of playing time in the IPL but said he is working hard to prepare himself for the English season.

“I’m in good form, but there is not much I can do about selection,” said Roy. “I’m training as hard as I can and I’m taking the positives out it by getting ready for the English season.

“I’m definitely making the most of it and doing things that will benefit me not just now but over the next couple of months with the Champions Trophy coming up.

“Of course it would be nice to get a couple more opportunities to show what I’m really about,” the right-handed batsman said.
