IPL 2017 – Gujarat Lions Vs Rising Pune Supergiant – RPS Predicted XI

The battle of the weakest outfits this time around could well turn out to be enticing if the teams play to their potential. The teams under discussion here are the Steven Smith led Rising Pune Supergiant and hosts Gujarat Lions. While the previous edition was an absolute disaster for the Supergiant franchise, Gujarat impressed one and all by finishing third in their maiden IPL run.

The start to the second edition for both teams, however, has been a dreaded one, particularly for Suresh Raina’s Gujarat. Having said that, Pune wouldn’t feel any better either, coming on the back of successive losses against Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils. By the end of this game, we will easily be able to determine which team has the weakest bowling outfit in this season. Pune’s death bowling woes have been made into a laughing stock with the side being terribly short of bowlers.

Call it the sheer narrow-minded approach of the owners or the poor execution of the bowlers, the fact remains that if Pune is to even garner a few more points, their bowlers need to improve vastly.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER:

A high scoring clash was witnessed at the MCA Stadium in Pune when these two relatively new outfits locked horns in their previous game. Batting first, the Supergiant amassed a colossal 195 on board, with Australian batting ace Steven Smith scoring his maiden and till date, only T20 century. It was a typical Steven Smith innings full of enterprising strokes.

In response, it seemed that the Lions would run away with the game, as the score read almost 110 by the end of the tenth over, thanks to a ferocious start from openers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum. Things went down till the wire though as wickets made the game interesting. Nonetheless, finisher James Faulkner kept his cool to ensure that Gujarat got home on the final delivery of the game.

Recent form this season:

GL: L, L

RPS: L, L, W

Talking Points:

After missing out against the Delhi Daredevils owing to a stomach bug, skipper Steven Smith should return against Gujarat. He was terribly missed in his side’s previous game as the steep run chase against Delhi seemed toothless in his absence. If Pune wants to strengthen their underperforming batting, Faf du Plessis could be retained despite a failure.

Adam Zampa is bound to be dropped after an ordinary outing against Delhi where he was taken to the cleaners by Sanju Samson. Ideally, Rahul Chahar should replace him being a leg spinner. With talented pacers in the form of Jaydev Unadkat and Shardul Thakur warming the benches, at least one of the two deserves a spot in the team.

RPS Predicted XI:

  1. A. Rahane 2. F. du Plessis 3. S. Smith (c) 4. M. Tiwary 5. B. Stokes 6. MS Dhoni (wk) 7. R. Bhatia 8. R. Chahar 9. A. Dinda 10. I. Tahir 11. J. Unadkat
