IPL 2017: The Injured XI

Fans across the world are eagerly waiting for another season of the Indian Premier League which will kick off from April 5. But even before the tournament has started, it is in danger of losing its shine as some of the biggest names have been either ruled out of the season due to injuries or are still recovering from injuries. The injury is definitely going to hurt the franchises but there is very little they can do now apart from preparing with their available players.

So while the eight franchises wonder how would they line up if they had a full squad to pick from, we are presenting to you the injured XI:

Murali Vijay:

The India opener, who has been one of India’s most important players in the Test format, has been ruled out the of 2017 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to wrist and shoulder injuries. According to a BCCI release, Vijay will undergo surgery on his right wrist and left shoulder.

The Tamil Nadu ace, a two-time IPL champion with Chennai Super Kings, is a proven performer in the tournament and there is no doubt that Kings XI Punjab will miss him badly this season.

Quinton de Kock:

The South Africa star is also ruled out of this season due to a finger injury he had sustained during the second Test against New Zealand. The southpaw played the last Test with through the pain barrier but pulled out of the IPL. Cricket South Africa wanted that de Kock recover before the Champions Trophy and England Tests that follow the IPL.

The opening batsman, who was purchased for Rs. 3.5 crore in the 2014 auctions by Delhi Daredevils, has been their most consistent batsman in the last couple of seasons. In 2016, he had scored 445 runs in 13 matches including a century and three half-century.

One of the biggest attractions of this lucrative league, the Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper is set to remain on the sidelines for at least a couple of weeks to recover from the shoulder injury he had sustained during the Test series against Australia.

The India skipper was the Orange Cap winner of last season with an astonishing 973 runs in 16 outings including 4 centuries and 7 half-centuries.

AB de Villiers:

The explosive batsman’s participation is also under doubt due to a back injury. The South African batsman who was supposed to play for Titans in the Momentum One Day Cup final on Friday, was ruled out of the match due to the injury.

One of the best players in the history of the IPL, De Villiers has scored 3,257 runs in his IPL career so far.

KL Rahul:

Another big performer from the last season, Rahul is also ruled out of the entire season due to a shoulder injury. The Karnataka star, who had scored six fifties in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar series, is set to travel to London for a surgery. In the last season, he was Royal Challengers Bangalore’s third highest run-scorer with 397 runs in 12 innings.

Angelo Mathews:

The Sri Lanka skipper is doubtful for the early stages of the tournament due to a calf injury. The experienced all-rounder, who had sustained a hamstring injury during the T20 series in South Africa, was expected to have recovered by now but his return has been further delayed by a mild calf strain. He was bought by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 2 crore in this year’s player auction.

One of the best all-rounders in the shortest format of the game, Bravo is yet to recover from the hamstring injury he sustained in December 2016 while playing in the Big Bash League. The Melbourne Renegades recruit hurt himself while fielding and had to be stretchered off. He also had a surgery on his left hamstring and is expected to join the Gujarat Lions camp in the next seven days.

A veteran of over 100 IPL matches, the West Indies star has scored 1262 runs in addition to taking 122 wickets in the league.

Mitchell Marsh(Rising Pune Supergiant):

The Australia all-rounder has been ruled out of the entire season due to a shoulder injury. Marsh has performed well in the IPL since his debut in 2010 and could have provided the stability in the middle of the batting order for a team which is looking to do well this season after finishing seventh in the previous edition. His pace bowling and fielding abilities would have made him a big asset for his team.

He has been replaced by South Africa spinner Imran Tahir for the tenth edition of the tournament.

Ravindra Jadeja:

The world-number one Test bowler played all of India’s 13 matches at home this season and was rightfully advised by the BCCI to rest for 2 weeks to recuperate. The left-arm spinner has some issues with the spinning finger but he is expected to return to action right after the two weeks of the rest period.

R Ashwin:

The India off-spinner will miss the upcoming season owing to sports hernia. The ICC Player of the Year has been in a prolific run of form with the ball in recent months, playing a key role in India’s home Test season. During the marathon home period, he bowled 738.2 overs and picked up a record 82 wickets. A proven performer in the IPL, there is no doubt that he will be missed by Rising Pune Supergiant.

Umesh Yadav:

The fast-bowler has also been advised to rest for a couple of weeks after bowling heavily in the marathon home season. The Kolkata Knight Riders bowler was the pace spearhead for India in the just concluded home season after Mohammed Shami was ruled out in the middle of the England series. The right-arm pacer had sent down an incredible 355.5 overs in 12 games and played an integral role in India’s prolific run of 10 wins in 13 matches.
