IPL 2017: “Lack Of Experienced Bowlers Cost Us,” Says Gujarat Lions Skipper Suresh Raina

At one stage, it looked like today we might experience a high scoring contest just like the previous game in Kanpur but this time, Gujarat disappointed us by registering one of the worst collapses in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL).

The table toppers of last year tournament were just one down with a score of 111 and then came the moment when Gujarat side blew away by Hyderabad as their innings was over on 154, which was a terrible score considering the start they got.

Half-centuries from Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan were the only things to rejoice for them as barring that, Gujarat just had litle joy on the field when they got two early wickets but after that, they were totally out of  the game as Vijay Shankar and David Warner shared 133 runs for the third wicket to seal a place for Hyderabad in the next round.

Gujarat is itself to be blamed for this torrid season as they did not make smart purchases in the auction especially the bowling depatment which is weak, Though they had veterans like Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar but now they have past their prime, and this side needed some fresh bowlers which they did not have.

In addition to it, an injury to Andrew Tye at crucial stage added to their woes and as a result, Gujarat ended the tournament as the seventh-ranked team.

Gujarat’s skipper Suresh Raina also accepted that it was the lack of experienced bowlers in the side that made the difference as he said –

Suresh Raina: It’s been that way for a couple of games, lack of experienced bowlers cost us. Credit to SRH, they had a game plan and went along with it. It was a disappointing year this time around, but there were some positives – the bowling of Basil Thampi was excellent, Ishan Kishan batted very well. Disappointing season, we need to forget this year – we didn’t play well as a unit. Thanks to the crowd in Kanpur and Rajkot, the support here was outstanding and the facilities were great as well. Thankful to the administrators and the groundsmen for their work. We had a fine platform set today, but we lost our way completely after the first 10 overs.
