IPL 2017: List Of Purple Cap Holder In The Past Seasons

Purple Cap, the prize for being the highest wicket-taker in a season, is the ultimate parameter to judge the effectiveness of bowlers in the IPL. Many highly talented names have grabbed the purple cap over the years.

Speaking about the prominent recipient of the honour, Dwayne Bravo, the CSK Star, has won it twice, the most number of times in the past nine seasons while Pakistan’s Sohail Tanvir happens to be the first ever winner of the purple cap in the IPL.

Ironically, despite the presence of many high-class spinners, only one spinner – Pragyan Ojha – has ever managed to score this distinction.

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga (2009, 2011 and 2012) and Vinay Kumar (2010, 2012 and 2013) have featured in the top five of the wicket taker’s list three times so far. Also, in the nine seasons, it has been only thrice that the Purple Cap recipient came from the champion side.

Let’s take a detailed look:

Sohail Tanvir – 2008:

Pakistan’s quirky left-arm fast bowler bamboozled batsmen in the league with his whippy, wrong-footed bowling action. Sohail Tanvir, representing the underdogs Rajasthan Royals, was close to being an unplayable commodity in the inaugural season.

He played a massive role in helping his team win the title despite been underrated by critics. He ended with 22 wickets in 11 matches at a stunning bowling average of 12.09 and with a miserly economy rate of 6.46.

RP Singh – 2009:

RP Singh was the first Indian to win the Purple Cap. Playing for Deccan Chargers, the left arm fast bowler performed to his best throughout the season to end with 23 wickets in 16 matches with best bowling figures of 4/22.

It was also the first edition to be held outside India. The tournament took place in South Africa where venues provided great help of seamers like him.

Deccan Chargers were eventual champions and the triumph would have been impossible without RP Singh’s bowling contributions.

Pragyan Ojha – 2010:

Pragyan Ojha remains the only spinner to have ever won the purple cap in the history of the IPL. The left arm spinner was in his prime during that time and despite being a completely orthodox bowler, he was able to get better of his oppositions completely on a consistent basis during that season. Ojha, Deccan Chargers’ frontline spinner then, was so good that season that he eclipsed the likes of Amit Mishra, Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble to top the bowling chart with 21 wickets in 16 matches. His best bowling figures of the season were 3/26.

Lasith Malinga – 2011:

Sri Lanka’s greatest fast bowler in the limited overs format, Lasith Malinga, ruled over batsmen in the 2011 season. After joining Mumbai Indians in 2009, Malinga reached the peak in 2011 after he recorded 28 wickets in just 16 matches. Even better part than the wicket was that he maintained a sub-6 runs economy rate throughout the tournament. Armed with a lethal yorker, his effectiveness was so high that he also eventually took over the record of for the most wickets by a bowler in a single IPL edition overcoming RP Singh’s 23 wickets in 2009 season.

Morne Morkel – 2012:

One extra match and one extra wicket were the fact that separated the No.1 and No.2 bowler of the 2012 season. Mystery bowler Sunil Narine, playing in his debut season, was bowling like an immortal soul and lead the bowling charts with 24 wickets in 15 matches. He appeared to be the likeliest name to win the Purple cap before Delhi Daredevils Morne Morkel overtook him with 25 wickets in 16 matches. Narine, with the help of his knuckleball, was the one who grabbed the limelight for most of the season but the tall fast bowler South Africa was equally good that season and eventually ended up as the highest wicket-taker.

Dwayne Bravo – 2013:

2013 was a special year for Dwayne Bravo. The medium pacer from West Indies earned a highly appreciable feat of becoming the first bowler to take 30 or more wicket in a single IPL edition. He took 32 wickets in 18 matches which included 1 four-wicket haul. The record still remains intact to this day. Bravo claimed those wickets at an average of 15.53 with best bowling figures of 4/42. That season, in particular, was known for its high wicket-taking ratio as Rajasthan Royals’ James Faulkner stood at second with 28 wickets in 16 matches while Harbhajan Singh, with 24 wickets in 19 matches, claimed the third place.

Mohit Sharma – 2014:

The Haryana star, fresh from playing his debut season for the national team, stamped his authority by snapping 23 wickets in 16 matches. His mixture of accuracy and a well disguised back of the hand slower one helped him overshadow names like Sunil Narine, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja who followed him in the bowling charts. While his economy rate – 8.39 – was a bit high according to normal standards, his strike rate was pretty impressive at 14 runs per wicket.

Dwayne Bravo – 2015:

Dwayne Bravo again ruled the bowling charts in the 2015 season. The West Indies superstar looked on the verge of bettering his own record which he set in 2013 during that particular season. In the 17 matches, he played, the right arm fast bowler grabbed 26 matches with best bowling figures of 3/22. Mumbai Indians’ Lasith Malinga followed him in the wicket-takers list, standing at No. 2 with 24 wickets in 15 matches.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 2016:

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s maiden title winning run was supported by the brainy bowling efforts of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The gentle swing bowler, with his accuracy and improvised death bowling capabilities, was able to snap 23 wickets in 17 matches t end as the recipient of the Purple Cap. Eg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who plays for RCB, occupied the second position with 21 wickets in 21 matches.
