This edition of the IPL continues to surprise us with every passing day, as another superb fixture of T20 cricket was witnessed in Delhi. The Delhi Daredevils put on a spirited performance to overcome the in-form side of Rising Pune Supergiant and keep the fate of the playoff scenario still wide open. It was a game full of thrills, as the hosts just about managed to squeeze the men from Pune.
Needing a moderate 169 to win on a good batting deck, the visitors lost opener Ajinkya Rahane right on the very first ball, as Zaheer Khan bowled an absolute peach. The middle order though, adjusted quite well and it only seemed to be a formality when 50 were needed off the last five overs.
However, some brilliant death bowling and some fine presence of mind from Mohammad Shami led to MS Dhoni’s run out which turned the game on its head. Ultimately, Pune lost by seven runs to still keep the tournament wide open.
Post the loss, skipper Steven Smith mentioned that losing wickets frequently, hurt his side.
“We let a few runs in the field. I thought 160 was par. Losing a few wickets probably cost us. Just taking one game at a time at the moment. There’s a game tomorrow if the result goes our way we are through, or else we will have to win our last game,” said Smith.
