IPL 2017: Our Fans And Franchise Deserve Much Better, Says A Dejected Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid, a man who rarely shows emotions, did not hide his frustration and disappointment after Delhi Daredevils suffered another humiliating defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

With their season on-line, the capital-based outfit came up with another poor performance against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday (April 30).

The Daredevils, led by Karun Nair in the absence of Zaheer Khan, was bundled out for a paltry 67 – the lowest total in the first innings of an IPL match. In reply, Glenn Maxwell’s men chased down the total with utmost ease in the eighth over without losing a wicket.

“Really disappointing, you don’t have much to say when you get out for 67 and the other side chases the target for no loss in 6-7 overs. We were pretty disappointing on the day and our execution was poor and our batting was not up to scratch,” Dravid said at the post-match conference.

With just a couple of wins in the eight matches, the Daredevils need to win almost all of their remaining matches to make it to the playoffs- an unlikely proposition considering their current form. However, Dravid feels his team can only move in an upward direction after the latest defeat and also admitted that his team has not played well in the previous two matches.

“We can only go up from here. But we have been better than what we showed today. Even in this tournament, there have been periods where we have shown glimpses of good cricket. We have lost some close games. But then in the last two, we haven’t played well,” said the legendary batsman.

Speaking about his team’s mistake in the match, the Daredevils mentor said:

“Here we were really poor and didn’t assess the condition and bat intelligently. We didn’t give ourselves a chance.”

He further admitted that his players are young before urging them to step up their games. The team is full of youngsters in the batting department but one cannot disagree with Dravid that they have got enough chances and it is high time they repay the faith,

“They are young but they have been playing IPL for a while. Most of them have shown glimpses of some good performances in this tournament and in the past as well. So really it’s going to be up to them to lift themselves up and go and play good cricket. The key will be not to think too far ahead and focus on the next game. We owe it to our fans and franchise, they deserve much better than what we did today,” a dejected Dravid said.
