IPL 2017 : RCB’s Overseas Woes

In all these years, no to mention, Royal Challengers Bangalore indeed boast of the strongest lineup, but, alas failed to perform up to potential. With Chris gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in the team, things have looked fairytale for years but the team has crambled despite huge names.

This year, in the tenth edition of the league, things seems more worse. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), without the services of Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, opted to bolster their bowling by splashing Rs 12 crore on England’s Tymal Mills. RCB bought left-arm quick, Mills and 4 others. Mills is a Twenty20 specialist and has already impressed in various leagues across the world.

They missed services of Virat and AB De Villiers in the initial phase of the league due to injury issues but a relief came when they joined the side. De Villiers played an awesome innings in first match and Kohli too had a comeback in the innings with a half century but still the team failed to win.

They had been trying hard to find the right combination since the first making Watson the captain in first few games, then dropping Gayle in two of the matches, not only that, their lower middle order too looks weak.

Let’s see the overseas player that are woes for the team and what is going wrong for the franchise:

Chris Gayle: The 37-year-old left-hander is struggling with the bat in the ongoing IPL but he is just 3 runs away from becoming the first player in T20 history to aggregate 10,000 runs.

The 10,000-run mark has been breached by several batsmen in first-class and List A (50 overs) formats but never in the shortest form of the game. Gayle, a veteran of 289 T20s, has so far accumulated 9,997 runs at an average of over 40. He has 18 hundreds with a highest of 175 not out, an IPL record. With just 6 and 22 from his two matches so far in IPL this season so far, Gayle was dropped.

Gayle, who needed just three runs in this match to reach the landmark has been dropped in favour of Shane Watson. He was earlier axed against Kings XI Punjab in favour of the returning of AB de Villiers. However, he replaced Watson in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s previous match versus the Mumbai Indians, which RCB lost by four wickets.

Gayle, who has been out of the West Indies team for a while now, participates in different T20 competitions around the world like the Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League in Australia. Bangalore next play the Gujarat Lions in Rajkot, where Gayle will hope to reach the milestone.

Shane Watson – Virat missing the IPL made Watson the captain. But that backfired as his loopholes were recognised as one of the reasons of the loss against the defending champions in first match. Watson who has not had a very good IPL thus far, either with bat or ball, probably decided that he’d go after these lesser known Indian batsmen and help himself to some easy wickets at the end of the innings.

Watson who was bought by RCB last season for Rs 9.5 crore, could not deliver his worth. It was just that RCB after three losses from four matches could not afford the luxury. Tiwary’s 27 from 11 balls lifted RPS as RCB surrendered the momentum on a pitch where batting was anything but easy in last days game.

Tymal Mills – English pace sensation Tymal Mills, had eyeballs rolling since the days of the auction this year. With a whopping amount of 12 crore RCB bought the man and thus a lot of talk went from here and there. But that has pressured him too much seems. Though he didn’t perform so well in the first few games but also didn’t perform too bad to miss out a match. After Samuel Badree’s hattrick against Mumbai, both Milne and Badree were selected in last days squad leaving out mills, the star pacer. But still it didn’t prove much for the franchise and RCB lost again.

Adam Milne- Yes, yet again a new inclusion in Squad.playing his first T20 in over a year, took two wickets in two balls and ended with 2 for 27.

Royal Challengers Bangalore could not chase down 162-run target against Rising Pune Supergiant at M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. It was the record lowest total defend by a visiting team in Bangalore. Christian, Stokes, Thakur and Jaydev Unadkat all bowled an assortment of slower balls, but the key was their lengths. And RCB failed to read that and do that in return.

“We do not deserve to win if we play like that” – Virat Kohli

With only a single win from five games, they are now in the last position on the league table. That is a surprise for fans of the team who played the final last year!

It is said that a team is made not of big names but looking on the roles that a team needs and selecting players according to how they fit in that.

RCB lower order and the lower middle has failed to perform partly due to their glamorous top order. Hope the franchise and the skipper finds out the right combination and thus start winning as soon as possible to be in the run for the title.
