IPL 2017: Rising Pune Supergiant’s Ben Stokes Likely To Miss Playoffs

With the playoff berth in sight in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, Rising Pune Supergiant will miss the services of their star player Ben Stokes even if they make it to the last four. The England international is expected to leave India in the coming week to join his England teammates as they get ready for the training camp in Spain next week in order to prepare for the One-Day International Series against South Africa and then the ICC Champions Trophy. The Three Lions will play a three-match ODI series along with two practice matches against the Proteas. The warm-up games will be played on the 19th and 21st of May while the series starts on 24th May.

Stokes missed the two-match ODI series against Ireland last week but is very much likely to not play a part in the latter stages of the tournament.

According to reports in English news outlet The Mirror, Andrew Strauss, the director of England cricket, has ordered the players to follow the May 15 deadline for England’s players to join up for a team bonding and training trip to Spain ahead of the Champions Trophy. In such a scenario, Stokes is likely to play the game against Delhi Daredevils (May 12) and if possible then the last league game against Kings XI Punjab on May 14.

The playoffs, meanwhile, are starting from May 16 and with 8 wins in 12 games, the Supergiant are well-placed to make it to the last four. But Stokes’ absence will be a huge blow for them as they would be keen to go all the way this season. The England all-rounder, who is the costliest overseas player in the history of the tournament, has played an integral role in the Pune-based side’s remarkable run this season. In 10 matches so far, Stokes has scored 283 runs including a century and a fifty in addition to taking 10 wickets at an economy rate of just over 10.

The news that the English players will be leaving the tournament by May 15 will not only be a blow to Pune but also to Mumbai Indians and to Kolkata Knight Riders who are in first and second in the table and have Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes playing key parts respectively.
