Kings XI Punjab defeated Chennai Super Kings in by six wickets at Abu Dhabi in the third match of seventh season of Indian Premier League. This run-chase was only fourth occasion when a team have chased down a target of more than 200 runs.
Chasing a massive target of 206 runs, Punjab batsmen, led by a fearless Maxwell, reached the target in over 19th over, with 7 deliveries to spare.
Star for Punjab was Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who smashed a brilliant 95 off 43, scoring at strike-rate of 220.93. During his 43 ball stay, Maxwell scored 15 fours and 2 sixes. Maxwell was ably supported by David Miller, who played the anchor role by scoring 54 runs, as the duo put on 115 runs for the fourth wicket.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings posted an enormous total of 205/4 against Kings XI Punjab.
For Chennai their new openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith, both playing their first match for new franchise, put on a massive 123 run partnership for the first wicket. McCullum continued his good form as he top scored for Chennai with 67 runs off 45 balls, smashing 4 fours and 5 sixes, while Dwayne Smith scored 66 which included 6 fours and 3 sixes.
For Kings XI Punjab, L Balaji was the most successful bowler picking up two wickets for 43 in his fours overs in an otherwise disappointing bowling display. Mitchell Johnson struggled today as he conceded 47 runs in his four overs.
Earlier at the toss, on a very hot afternoon, Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat.
Chennai Super Kings were playing their 100th game of IPL since the league began in 2008. Suresh Raina became the first player to feature in each one of them.
On to the team new now, Chennai’s overseas contingent contained two players – Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum – who were on debut, while Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo rounded up the other two. Smith and McCullum are a brand new opening combination, replacing Michael Huseey and Murli Vijay who left for Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils respectively in the auction earlier this year. Chennai packed up their line-up with three specialist spinners in Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Pawan Negi.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, Punjab picked three Australians George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Johnson as their three out four overseas players. David Miller rounded up the quota. Kings XI surprisingly went on with only one specialist spinner – Akshar Patel, as they decide to rely on Glenn Maxwell’s handy off-spin.
Punjab: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Cheteshwar Pujara, 3 David Miller, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 7 Mitchell Johnson, 8 Rishi Dhawan, 9 Akshar Patel, 10 Parvinder Awana, 11 L Balaji.
