IPL 9: Top 5 knocks in a losing cause

IPL 9 was a successful tournament which saw some brilliant batting performances from individual players from all eight teams in the competition. Despite players with superb batting there were some instances that there innings did not result in their teams winning the matches for their franchise.

Here we look at the top 5 knocks which came in a losing cause.

 1.  Steve Smith’s unbeaten 101 vs Gujarat Lions

Steve Smith was at his best in the 25th match at MCA Stadium, Pune on 29th April 2016 against Gujarat Lions. It was an exceptional knock by Steve Smith who batted superbly. The Australian cricket just timed the ball from the word go. In that knock he smashed Gujarat Lions to all parts of the ground. He took the attack to the bowlers and did not allow the bowlers to settle. His knock of 101 off 54 balls helped Pune Super Giants to post a competitive total of 195 for 3. Gujarat Lions openers gave the team a flying start which eased the pressure on others. At the end , Gujarat Lions won the match by 3 wickets on the last ball.

2. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century against Gujarat Lions

Virat Kohli showed his class in 19th match at SCA Stadium, Rajkot on 24th April. He played a captains knock off 100 not out. Kohli opened the innings and anchored the innings with brilliant shots from his bat. He remained calm and scored most of runs in taking singles and doubles. He scored century off 63 balls. It was last ball of the innings and helped RCB to post 180 for 2. Gujarat Lions batsmen were brilliant chasing this target and won the match by six wickets. Kohli knock went in vain.

3. Chris Morris’ cameo off 82 in 32 against Gujarat Lions

Chris Morris quick fire knock off 82 in 32 balls came against Gujarat Lions at Feroshah Kotla Stadium, Delhi on 27th April. Gujarat Lions scored 172 for 6 in 20 over’s. Chasing this target, Delhi Daredevils were struggling at 57 for 4 in the 10 over. Chris Morris then stole the show with some brilliant shots and attacked the bowlers. He completed his half century in 17 balls and revived Delhi Daredevils hopes of winning the match. In the last over ,Chris Morris could not hit a boundary and lost the match by 1 run. His unbeaten knock off 82 in 32 balls could not help Delhi Daredevils cross the finishing line.

4. Hashim Amla’s 96 against SRH

Hashim Amla showed his class in the shorter version of the game by scoring 96 for Kings XI Punjab against SRH on the 15th May at PCA Stadium, Mohali. He timed the ball right from ball and played attacking strokes of SRH bowlers. His ability to play innovative strokes against top quality bowling line up of Rahman, Kumar and Nehra showed that he can score in shorter format also. His knock off 96 in 56 balls helped Kings XI Punjab to post 179. Chasing this target, SRH batsmen played sensibly and achieved this target with 3 balls to spare.

5. Ajiknya Rahane’s 74 against Royal Challengers Bangalore

Rahane scored a fluent 74 in the match for Rising Pune Super Giants against Royal Challengers Bangalore at M Chinswamy Stadium, Bangalore on 5th May. He opened the innings and  played superb shots off the fast bowlers and also the spinners. His knock off 74 off 48 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes helped Pune to post a competitive total 191 for 6. Kohli played a match winning innings scoring an unbeaten ton. Rahane knock did not help Pune to win the match.
