One of the most successful coaches in international cricket Gary Kirsten could not make a mark in his maiden stint as an IPL coach as his team ranked last in the previous season of the IPL and he was quick to admit that the IPL was different from international cricket and that everyone takes time to get used to it.
When asked what went wrong Gary added that the IPL was physically very demanding and that his team lacked a proper back-up last year. He said that feels this year he has good combinations and that he hopes that they work. Gary also said that Zaheer was picked even after an year away from cricket because his experience makes a huge difference. He added that Zaheer is good with youngsters and that he hopes for him to play a mentoring role also in team.
Kirsten was quick to admit that it was him who wanted Yuvraj in the team irrespective of the cost because he thinks that Yuvraj is a game changer. He said that he had a great time working with him in the national team and that he is fit and ready to play.
When asked about the prospect of bowling, Kirsten said that he loved the way Shami was bowling in the world cup and added that he is someone who looks for wickets and that it is important. He also added that JP Duminy was appointed as a coach as he knows the players has been playing regular cricket and has good leadership qualities.
